1998 Lexus LS — open carrier or enclosed for a normal enthusiast car?

WrenchCollectorCommunity StarterOct 11, 20251998 Lexus LS 400Cleveland
The car is valuable to me but not exotic. Enclosed transport costs noticeably more. When is the extra protection actually worth paying for versus a reputable open carrier? I am in Cleveland.

Compare apples to apples or you'll get spun. Ask for out-the-door on the 1998 Lexus LS with fees, add-ons, and rate on separate lines. I'd rather lose the car than buy a foggy deal. This is from a 1998 Lexus LS in Cleveland. A shop burned me once by skipping that step. If this is nothing, great. I want that in data.

That's a good start, but I wouldn't stop there. If one piece looks too good on the 1998 Lexus LS, hunt doc fees, accessories, and the APR next. Then the comparison gets honest. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

OP update: I got two written quotes on the 1998 Lexus LS and the out-the-door gap is bigger than the ads made it look. I screenshotted the quote for later.

I would not stare at the monthly. I would not wire money until I've seen the 1998 Lexus LS and the title situation in person or via a trusted PPI. Then the comparison gets honest. Was this after sitting overnight? Make the next action something you can finish this week. If the VIN lookup is clean I'm still doing PPI.

I'd push back a little: If one piece looks too good on the 1998 Lexus LS, hunt doc fees, accessories, and the APR next. That's the part that actually changes the decision. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. Calling insurance in the morning before I reply to the desk.

Not convinced that's the whole story. Two 1998 Lexus LS quotes only help if both include tax, title, and the same options. That's the part that actually changes the decision. Time, temperature, and whether it's in gear are the notes that actually help a shop. Worth doing even if the car feels fine right now. If they only talk monthly I'm walking.

Insurance and tax belong in the comparison, not as a surprise. Keep sale price, trade, and financing split on the 1998 Lexus LS so a “good payment” cannot bury a worse deal. Do that before you talk monthly again. On “open carrier or enclosed for a normal,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. Wrote this up on my lunch break.

Hard-won lesson from my last deal: GAP, paint, and nitrogen are optional until you run the 1998 Lexus LS numbers without them. If they balk, that's your answer. On “open carrier or enclosed for a normal,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 1998 Lexus LS in Cleveland. Post the numbers (or the code) and people can get more specific. This is the filter I use when the thread starts repeating itself. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.

I hear you, though I'd still want a second check. Keep sale price, trade, and financing split on the 1998 Lexus LS so a “good payment” cannot bury a worse deal. I'd rather lose the car than buy a foggy deal. Did the worksheet show tax yet? Sleeping on the number either way.

Walk if they won't put it on a buyer’s order. If one piece looks too good on the 1998 Lexus LS, hunt doc fees, accessories, and the APR next. Then the comparison gets honest. That's the whole play. This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

Treat this like a math problem, not a vibe. Ask for out-the-door on the 1998 Lexus LS with fees, add-ons, and rate on separate lines. Do that before you talk monthly again. Did the worksheet show tax yet? Not trying to scare you — just skip the expensive first guess. PPI guy I use is booked until next week, so I'm waiting.
