1998 Lexus LS — should I negotiate the trade and purchase separately?

1998 Lexus LS 400, about 210,500 miles. I have a trade with some equity and I am buying another car. Dealer wants to talk only in payment numbers. Would you settle sale price first, then trade value, then financing so each piece stays visible?

Before you spend money, compare the out-the-door number on the 1998 Lexus LS, not the monthly payment.

If it were mine, I would not send a deposit before I have seen the 1998 Lexus LS and the title situation.

Coming back with numbers: insurance and tax on the 1998 Lexus LS changed the comparison more than the sale price did.

One thing that mattered for me: a written buyer’s order is worth more than a phone promise on a 1998 Lexus LS.

One thing that mattered for me: keep sale price, trade, and financing on separate lines so a “good payment” cannot hide a worse car price.

I would not stop there. if one piece of the deal looks too good, look at add-ons, doc fees, and rate.

OP here. I am still looking, but I am waiting on the inspection notes before I send any money.
