Ignoring limited-production supercars, which current or recent cars have the ingredients collectors may care about later: drivetrain, design, rarity, enthusiast following, manual availability or a unique platform? I am trying to get the facts straight before spending money.

Owner notes beat generic advice here. On the 1998 Lexus LS in California, I'd fix the thing you'll notice every day before chasing spec-sheet extras. That's where I'd start. On “what current car has future-classic potential without,” that was the fork that mattered for me. That's the sequence I'd use. Wrote this up on my lunch break.

Quick add on that: On the 1998 Lexus LS in California, I'd fix the thing you'll notice every day before chasing spec-sheet extras. I'd do that before spending real money. On “what current car has future-classic potential without,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Post the numbers (or the code) and people can get more specific. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.

I'd keep this practical. Verify the cheap/easy branch on the 1998 Lexus LS before a big repair or a big spend. Then you'll know the next fork. If they can't show the line item, I assume it's hiding. Doing the boring step first on purpose.

Yes, with one caveat: A second data point from another 1998 Lexus LS owner helps more than a generic diagnosis. That's where I'd start. Take it or leave it — that's what I'd do. Not trying to scare you — just skip the expensive first guess. If this is nothing, great. I want that in data.
