2019 Mazda Mazda3 — reliable cheap first car or newer car with warranty? — trying to narrow this down

WeekendGarageCommunity StarterOct 2, 20252019 Mazda Mazda3 PreferredSeattle
I am trying to balance purchase price against downtime and surprise repairs. Would you put the same budget into an older proven car with cash left over, or a newer car with warranty coverage? I am trying to get the facts straight before spending money.

I'd treat this like cash with a paper trail. Independent PPI on the 2019 Mazda Mazda3 is cheap insurance versus a seller who “already had a friend look at it.” Then you'll know the next fork. On “reliable cheap first car or newer car,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Time, temperature, and whether it's in gear are the notes that actually help a shop. If they get vague again I'm shopping the deal elsewhere.

I'd push back a little: If the 2019 Mazda Mazda3 still shows a lien, coordinate payoff with the lender before any cash changes hands. That's where I'd start. Did the worksheet show tax yet? Worth doing even if the car feels fine right now. Going to compare one more dealer before I decide.

Quick add on that: Meet at a bank or dealer title office for the 2019 Mazda Mazda3, not a parking lot at night. Then you'll know the next fork. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. PPI guy I use is booked until next week, so I'm waiting.
