2019 Ram 2500 — dealer keeps discussing monthly payment instead of OTD

CityMechanicish14Community StarterSep 28, 20252019 Ram 2500 CumminsNationwide
2019 Ram 2500 Cummins, about 87,500 miles. Every time I ask for sale price and fees, the conversation goes back to monthly payment. I am bringing my own financing. Is there any reason not to insist on a full buyer order before going in?

I'd slow the salesperson down here. In Nationwide, insurance quotes flipped a 2019 Ram 2500 comparison for me more than the sale price did. That's the part that actually changes the decision. Stop there until you know. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

If I were shopping this, two 2019 Ram 2500 quotes only help if both include tax, title, and the same options. Screenshot the worksheet if you can. This is from a 2019 Ram 2500 in Nationwide with 87,500 miles. Time, temperature, and whether it's in gear are the notes that actually help a shop. Worth doing even if the car feels fine right now. This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

Treat this like a math problem, not a vibe. Call your insurer in Nationwide before you fall in love with the 2019 Ram 2500. Do that before you talk monthly again. Run the total, not the monthly, before you commit. Going to re-read the worksheet tonight.

Compare apples to apples or you'll get spun. A written buyer’s order on the 2019 Ram 2500 is worth more than any verbal “we’ll make it work.” Do that before you talk monthly again. If they can't show the line item, I assume it's hiding. Not trying to scare you — just skip the expensive first guess. Sleeping on the number either way.

Hard-won lesson from my last deal: Call your insurer in Nationwide before you fall in love with the 2019 Ram 2500. Do that before you talk monthly again. On “dealer keeps discussing monthly payment instead of,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Had a similar mess a couple years ago and that's what finally sorted it. This is the filter I use when the thread starts repeating itself. I screenshotted the quote for later.

I'd slow the salesperson down here. If one piece looks too good on the 2019 Ram 2500, hunt doc fees, accessories, and the APR next. That's the part that actually changes the decision. Take it or leave it — that's what I'd do. A day of patience here is cheaper than a wrong part. Calling insurance in the morning before I reply to the desk.

The trap is a pretty payment hiding a worse car price. Two 2019 Ram 2500 quotes only help if both include tax, title, and the same options. That's the part that actually changes the decision. When does it actually happen? This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

I'd want competing paper, not competing stories. Call your insurer in Nationwide before you fall in love with the 2019 Ram 2500. I'd rather lose the car than buy a foggy deal. Just my two cents from doing this recently. If this is nothing, great. I want that in data.

Hard-won lesson from my last deal: GAP, paint, and nitrogen are optional until you run the 2019 Ram 2500 numbers without them. If they balk, that's your answer. On “dealer keeps discussing monthly payment instead of,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Just my two cents from doing this recently. If GAP is bundled I'm making them unbundle it.

If I were shopping this, if they're pushing term length to shrink the payment, the 2019 Ram 2500 price probably got worse. Screenshot the worksheet if you can. Had a similar mess a couple years ago and that's what finally sorted it. Going to compare one more dealer before I decide.

Asking because it changes the advice: If one piece looks too good on the 2019 Ram 2500, hunt doc fees, accessories, and the APR next. That's the part that actually changes the decision. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. Not wiring anything in the meantime.

I hear you, though I'd still want a second check. Call your insurer in Nationwide before you fall in love with the 2019 Ram 2500. If they balk, that's your answer. This is from a 2019 Ram 2500 in Nationwide with 87,500 miles. That's the whole play. I'd sleep better after that step, even if it finds nothing. If this is nothing, great. I want that in data.

Don't send a deposit on a phone quote. Two 2019 Ram 2500 quotes only help if both include tax, title, and the same options. Screenshot the worksheet if you can. Write the result down so the next test isn't a repeat of the last one. I'm keeping receipts and dates in one folder.

If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. Doing the boring step first on purpose.

Same neighborhood, different next step: A written buyer’s order on the 2019 Ram 2500 is worth more than any verbal “we’ll make it work.” Do that before you talk monthly again. On “dealer keeps discussing monthly payment instead of,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Stop there until you know. If your situation is the opposite, ignore me. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.

Insurance and tax belong in the comparison, not as a surprise. Call your insurer in Nationwide before you fall in love with the 2019 Ram 2500. If they balk, that's your answer. On “dealer keeps discussing monthly payment instead of,” that was the fork that mattered for me. That's the sequence I'd use. That's my plan before I call anyone.

Coming back with numbers — insurance in Nationwide changed the 2019 Ram 2500 comparison more than the sale price did. If the story changes I'll post the new data.

The trap is a pretty payment hiding a worse car price. I would not wire money until I've seen the 2019 Ram 2500 and the title situation in person or via a trusted PPI. Then the comparison gets honest. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. Your commute and mine probably aren't the same, but the test still applies. I'll update if anything new shows up.

Quick add on that: Call your insurer in Nationwide before you fall in love with the 2019 Ram 2500. If they balk, that's your answer. On “dealer keeps discussing monthly payment instead of,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Keep sale price, fees, and rate as three different conversations. Climate here is different, so treat that as a local data point. That's my plan before I call anyone.

Walk if they won't put it on a buyer’s order. If they're pushing term length to shrink the payment, the 2019 Ram 2500 price probably got worse. That's the part that actually changes the decision. This is from a 2019 Ram 2500 in Nationwide with 87,500 miles. I'd want a dollar figure or a measured spec, not 'should be fine.' Worth doing even if the car feels fine right now. If they only talk monthly I'm walking.

Don't send a deposit on a phone quote. If they're pushing term length to shrink the payment, the 2019 Ram 2500 price probably got worse. Screenshot the worksheet if you can. Do that first. That's coming from doing this as an owner, not a shop. Calling insurance in the morning before I reply to the desk.
