2020 Toyota Tundra — catalyst efficiency code but car drives normally

DetailBuilder590Community StarterJul 17, 20262020 Toyota Tundra SR5NYC
A catalyst efficiency code came back after clearing once. The car drives normally and there are no misfire codes. Before condemning the catalytic converter, what sensor/data checks are worth doing? I am in NYC. What would you check next?

If it were in my driveway, a pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2020 Toyota Tundra is losing coolant with no puddle. Save the big job until that test fails. Keep sale price, fees, and rate as three different conversations. I'd rather be boring and correct. Cold start is when I can actually reproduce it.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. Move a coil or plug on the 2020 Toyota Tundra if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. Save the big job until that test fails. Keep sale price, fees, and rate as three different conversations. That's coming from doing this as an owner, not a shop. Parking it somewhere I can hear it better next time.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Move a coil or plug on the 2020 Toyota Tundra if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. That's the branch I'd chase this week. On “catalyst efficiency code but car drives normally,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Stop there until you know. This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

Ask what changed right before it started. Capture voltage while the 2020 Toyota Tundra is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. If they can't show the line item, I assume it's hiding. I already checked the easy fluid levels.

OP update: scanned the 2020 Toyota Tundra again and still only have the one pending code, no new lights. Checking again after work.

It did catalyst efficiency code but car drives normally twice this week, both times after sitting. No change in mileage feel. Parking it somewhere I can hear it better next time.

I hear you, though I'd still want a second check. Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2020 Toyota Tundra does it — then decide on parts. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. Stop there until you know. Parking it somewhere I can hear it better next time.

Log the conditions before you spend. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2020 Toyota Tundra and see if the fault moves. That's the branch I'd chase this week. On “catalyst efficiency code but car drives normally,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Write the result down so the next test isn't a repeat of the last one. Next check is the cheap one I can do in a driveway.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2020 Toyota Tundra, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Time, temperature, and whether it's in gear are the notes that actually help a shop. Next check is the cheap one I can do in a driveway.

Checked the easy stuff on the 2020 Toyota Tundra and found one clue worth chasing before I book a shop. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.

If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. On “catalyst efficiency code but car drives normally,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 2020 Toyota Tundra in NYC. Stop there until you know. I'll poke at it this weekend.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2020 Toyota Tundra and see if the fault moves. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. This is from a 2020 Toyota Tundra in NYC. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. Your commute and mine probably aren't the same, but the test still applies. Not driving it hard until I know more.

I hear you, though I'd still want a second check. Two 2020 Toyota Tundras can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. This is from a 2020 Toyota Tundra in NYC. I'd want a dollar figure or a measured spec, not 'should be fine.' Cold start is when I can actually reproduce it.

Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. That's coming from doing this as an owner, not a shop. I'd rather pay for diagnosis than a second guess-repair.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. Two 2020 Toyota Tundras can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. This is from a 2020 Toyota Tundra in NYC. Not gospel, but it saved me a headache. Checking again after work.

That's a good start, but I wouldn't stop there. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2020 Toyota Tundra and see if the fault moves. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess.
