2021 Lexus ES — when does GAP actually make sense? — second opinion before I spend money

ShopMiles248Community StarterAug 20, 20262021 Lexus ES 350NYC
I am financing most of the purchase and depreciation could be steep early on. How do you decide whether GAP is worthwhile versus a larger down payment or buying coverage elsewhere?

If I were shopping this, in NYC, insurance quotes flipped a 2021 Lexus ES comparison for me more than the sale price did. Screenshot the worksheet if you can. Just my two cents from doing this recently. Doc fee is the line I'm watching.

If I were shopping this, in NYC, insurance quotes flipped a 2021 Lexus ES comparison for me more than the sale price did. Then the comparison gets honest. Did the worksheet show tax yet? Not letting add-ons ride along because everyone does.

Update from me: I finally have sale price, fees, and trade on separate lines for the 2021 Lexus ES. PPI guy I use is booked until next week, so I'm waiting.

Don't send a deposit on a phone quote. If one piece looks too good on the 2021 Lexus ES, hunt doc fees, accessories, and the APR next. Screenshot the worksheet if you can. This is from a 2021 Lexus ES in NYC. Write the result down so the next test isn't a repeat of the last one. I'm keeping receipts and dates in one folder.

Treat this like a math problem, not a vibe. A written buyer’s order on the 2021 Lexus ES is worth more than any verbal “we’ll make it work.” I'd rather lose the car than buy a foggy deal. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. I'd rather be boring and correct. Going to re-read the worksheet tonight.

Agree — and I'd add this: Ask for out-the-door on the 2021 Lexus ES with fees, add-ons, and rate on separate lines. I'd rather lose the car than buy a foggy deal. On “when does gap actually make sense? —,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Learned this the expensive way on a previous car. Climate here is different, so treat that as a local data point. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.

Get the messy numbers in writing first. Ask for out-the-door on the 2021 Lexus ES with fees, add-ons, and rate on separate lines. If they balk, that's your answer. On “when does gap actually make sense? —,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Keep sale price, fees, and rate as three different conversations. If GAP is bundled I'm making them unbundle it.

Don't send a deposit on a phone quote. I would not wire money until I've seen the 2021 Lexus ES and the title situation in person or via a trusted PPI. Then the comparison gets honest. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. I'm keeping receipts and dates in one folder.

Hard-won lesson from my last deal: GAP, paint, and nitrogen are optional until you run the 2021 Lexus ES numbers without them. I'd rather lose the car than buy a foggy deal. On “when does gap actually make sense? —,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Do that first. Climate here is different, so treat that as a local data point. If they get vague again I'm shopping the deal elsewhere.

Walk if they won't put it on a buyer’s order. If they're pushing term length to shrink the payment, the 2021 Lexus ES price probably got worse. Screenshot the worksheet if you can. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. If they only talk monthly I'm walking.

I would not stare at the monthly. If they're pushing term length to shrink the payment, the 2021 Lexus ES price probably got worse. Then the comparison gets honest. Stop there until you know. If the VIN lookup is clean I'm still doing PPI.

PPI is scheduled. I'm not depositing until I see the 2021 Lexus ES notes. Doing the boring step first on purpose.

Treat this like a math problem, not a vibe. Call your insurer in NYC before you fall in love with the 2021 Lexus ES. If they balk, that's your answer. This is from a 2021 Lexus ES in NYC. Have you gotten a second quote in writing? If this is nothing, great. I want that in data.

Quick update: a second 2021 Lexus ES quote made the first offer look ordinary. I screenshotted the quote for later.

I asked about when does gap actually make sense? — again and they still won't put GAP/add-ons on their own lines. Calling insurance in the morning before I reply to the desk.

Same neighborhood, different next step: Keep sale price, trade, and financing split on the 2021 Lexus ES so a “good payment” cannot bury a worse deal. I'd rather lose the car than buy a foggy deal. On “when does gap actually make sense? —,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Have you gotten a second quote in writing? If your situation is the opposite, ignore me. That's my plan before I call anyone.

Don't send a deposit on a phone quote. Two 2021 Lexus ES quotes only help if both include tax, title, and the same options. Screenshot the worksheet if you can. When does it actually happen? I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.
