2023 Toyota 4Runner — safest way to handle a test drive with a stranger

BoostWrenchCommunity StarterMay 28, 20262023 Toyota 4Runner TRD ProBoston
I am selling privately for the first time. I want serious buyers to drive the car but do not want to be careless with keys, insurance, license info or where we meet. What is a sensible process?

Title status is the whole conversation. Independent PPI on the 2023 Toyota 4Runner is cheap insurance versus a seller who “already had a friend look at it.” I'd do that before spending real money. Run the total, not the monthly, before you commit. I'd rather be boring and correct. PPI guy I use is booked until next week, so I'm waiting.

Title status is the whole conversation. If the 2023 Toyota 4Runner still shows a lien, coordinate payoff with the lender before any cash changes hands. That's where I'd start. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. PPI guy I use is booked until next week, so I'm waiting.

Don't get cute with the meetup or the payment. Independent PPI on the 2023 Toyota 4Runner is cheap insurance versus a seller who “already had a friend look at it.” Then you'll know the next fork. Stop there until you know. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

Don't get cute with the meetup or the payment. Bill of sale, VIN, odometer, and names matching the title — I'd want all four on the 2023 Toyota 4Runner. Then you'll know the next fork. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. I'm keeping receipts and dates in one folder.

I'd treat this like cash with a paper trail. If the 2023 Toyota 4Runner still shows a lien, coordinate payoff with the lender before any cash changes hands. That's where I'd start. On “safest way to handle a test drive,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Just my two cents from doing this recently. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.

Private-party deals fail on paperwork, not vibes. Bill of sale, VIN, odometer, and names matching the title — I'd want all four on the 2023 Toyota 4Runner. Then you'll know the next fork. Was this after sitting overnight? Doing the boring step first on purpose.

Title status is the whole conversation. A rushed deposit before you can inspect the 2023 Toyota 4Runner is enough reason to walk. Then you'll know the next fork. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. Going to re-read the worksheet tonight.

Learned this the expensive way on a previous car. That's coming from doing this as an owner, not a shop. If the story changes I'll post the new data.

I asked for the buyer’s order in email, not a text.

I hear you, though I'd still want a second check. If the 2023 Toyota 4Runner still shows a lien, coordinate payoff with the lender before any cash changes hands. Then you'll know the next fork. This is from a 2023 Toyota 4Runner in Boston. Had a similar mess a couple years ago and that's what finally sorted it. Going to re-read the worksheet tonight.
