2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata Club — anyone else: Miata soft-top clicking over small bumps

TowCommuter12Community StarterJul 14, 20262024 Mazda MX-5 Miata ClubBay Area
Getting a repetitive click from around the roof/header area on rough pavement. Top seals look okay and it doesn't leak. Has anyone isolated a trim/latch/felt contact noise like this without replacing parts? I'd rather test this logically than start replacing parts.

OP update: scanned the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata again and still only have the one pending code, no new lights. Cold start is when I can actually reproduce it.

Asking because it changes the advice: Capture voltage while the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. If that fails I'll eat the diagnostic fee.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Capture voltage while the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. Save the big job until that test fails. On “5 miata club — anyone else: miata,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata in Bay Area. Learned this the expensive way on a previous car. Checking again after work.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata does it — then decide on parts. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. On “5 miata club — anyone else: miata,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata in Bay Area. Had a similar mess a couple years ago and that's what finally sorted it. If the story changes I'll post the new data.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata is losing coolant with no puddle. That's the branch I'd chase this week. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. I'd sleep better after that step, even if it finds nothing. Only after sitting overnight so far.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata and see if the fault moves. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. If this is nothing, great. I want that in data.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. On “5 miata club — anyone else: miata,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata in Bay Area. Run the total, not the monthly, before you commit. Next check is the cheap one I can do in a driveway.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata is losing coolant with no puddle. That's the branch I'd chase this week. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. If that fails I'll eat the diagnostic fee.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. Two 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miatas can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Run the total, not the monthly, before you commit. I already checked the easy fluid levels.

Same neighborhood, different next step: A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata is losing coolant with no puddle. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. When does it actually happen? I'd rather be boring and correct. Next check is the cheap one I can do in a driveway.

I'd push back a little: Loaded-suspension checks on the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Learned this the expensive way on a previous car. That's coming from doing this as an owner, not a shop. This is the version I'd tell a friend.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. Capture voltage while the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. Save the big job until that test fails. I'd want a dollar figure or a measured spec, not 'should be fine.' Not trying to scare you — just skip the expensive first guess. Trying not to diagnose from the couch.

Log the conditions before you spend. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. That's the branch I'd chase this week. On “5 miata club — anyone else: miata,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Any freeze-frame data saved? I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.
