Anyone else: Payload sticker changed my whole truck-shopping plan

I was focused on tow rating until I started adding passengers, gear and tongue weight. Now payload looks like the real limit. How much buffer do you personally leave for a family towing setup? Any data points from owners would help.

Write down what you already tried. A second data point from another 1988 Toyota Land Cruiser owner helps more than a generic diagnosis. I'd do that before spending real money. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. Might be overthinking it, but I'd rather overthink than overspend.

Don't overfit one forum story to your car. If it still isn't clear on the 1988 Toyota Land Cruiser, a specialist hour can be cheaper than another round of parts. I'd do that before spending real money. This is from a 1988 Toyota Land Cruiser in Denver / Front Range. Not gospel, but it saved me a headache. That's coming from doing this as an owner, not a shop. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

Yes, with one caveat: A second data point from another 1988 Toyota Land Cruiser owner helps more than a generic diagnosis. That's where I'd start. If you share a photo of the worksheet, easier to sanity-check. If this is nothing, great. I want that in data.
