CPO luxury SUV or brand-new mainstream SUV?

PistonSeller89Community StarterAug 17, 20262024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-RoadLos Angeles
2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road, about 62,000 miles. Budget works for either a lightly used luxury SUV or a new mainstream model with a full warranty. I'm more worried about three-to-five-year ownership cost and service downtime than the purchase price. How would you compare them? I'd rather test this logically than start replacing parts. Ambient temp was about 45°F when I noticed it.

Hard-won lesson from my last deal: Call your insurer in Los Angeles before you fall in love with the 2024 Toyota Tacoma. If they balk, that's your answer. On “new mainstream suv,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Time, temperature, and whether it's in gear are the notes that actually help a shop. Wrote this up on my lunch break.

PPI is scheduled. I'm not depositing until I see the 2024 Toyota Tacoma notes. If they only talk monthly I'm walking.

Walked a dealership this week on the 2024 Toyota Tacoma (62,000 miles) and the doc fee was the tell. If this is nothing, great. I want that in data.

If I were shopping this, if they're pushing term length to shrink the payment, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma price probably got worse. That's the part that actually changes the decision. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. I've seen both outcomes, which is why I'd test instead of assume. This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

Update from me: I finally have sale price, fees, and trade on separate lines for the 2024 Toyota Tacoma. Might be overthinking it, but I'd rather overthink than overspend.

I would not stare at the monthly. If they're pushing term length to shrink the payment, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma price probably got worse. That's the part that actually changes the decision. Happy to compare notes if your setup is different. A day of patience here is cheaper than a wrong part. If the story changes I'll post the new data.

I'd slow the salesperson down here. I would not wire money until I've seen the 2024 Toyota Tacoma and the title situation in person or via a trusted PPI. Then the comparison gets honest. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. That's coming from doing this as an owner, not a shop. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

Asking because it changes the advice: I would not wire money until I've seen the 2024 Toyota Tacoma and the title situation in person or via a trusted PPI. Then the comparison gets honest. Keep sale price, fees, and rate as three different conversations. Doc fee is the line I'm watching.

Get the messy numbers in writing first. Ask for out-the-door on the 2024 Toyota Tacoma with fees, add-ons, and rate on separate lines. Do that before you talk monthly again. On “new mainstream suv,” that was the fork that mattered for me. A shop burned me once by skipping that step. If your situation is the opposite, ignore me. I screenshotted the quote for later.

That's a good start, but I wouldn't stop there. In Los Angeles, insurance quotes flipped a 2024 Toyota Tacoma comparison for me more than the sale price did. Then the comparison gets honest. If you share a photo of the worksheet, easier to sanity-check. This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

I'd push back a little: I would not wire money until I've seen the 2024 Toyota Tacoma and the title situation in person or via a trusted PPI. Then the comparison gets honest. Learned this the expensive way on a previous car. Doc fee is the line I'm watching.

Get the messy numbers in writing first. GAP, paint, and nitrogen are optional until you run the 2024 Toyota Tacoma numbers without them. If they balk, that's your answer. On “new mainstream suv,” that was the fork that mattered for me. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. That's my plan before I call anyone.

OP here. Still looking, but I'm waiting on inspection notes before I send money on the 2024 Toyota Tacoma. Doing the boring step first on purpose.

Insurance and tax belong in the comparison, not as a surprise. GAP, paint, and nitrogen are optional until you run the 2024 Toyota Tacoma numbers without them. I'd rather lose the car than buy a foggy deal. On “new mainstream suv,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 2024 Toyota Tacoma in Los Angeles with 62,000 miles. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. If GAP is bundled I'm making them unbundle it.

I'd slow the salesperson down here. In Los Angeles, insurance quotes flipped a 2024 Toyota Tacoma comparison for me more than the sale price did. Screenshot the worksheet if you can. Have you gotten a second quote in writing? If the VIN lookup is clean I'm still doing PPI.

Insurance and tax belong in the comparison, not as a surprise. A written buyer’s order on the 2024 Toyota Tacoma is worth more than any verbal “we’ll make it work.” Do that before you talk monthly again. On “new mainstream suv,” that was the fork that mattered for me. A shop burned me once by skipping that step. I asked for the buyer’s order in email, not a text.

If I were shopping this, if one piece looks too good on the 2024 Toyota Tacoma, hunt doc fees, accessories, and the APR next. That's the part that actually changes the decision. Was this after sitting overnight? Going to compare one more dealer before I decide.

Compare apples to apples or you'll get spun. Call your insurer in Los Angeles before you fall in love with the 2024 Toyota Tacoma. Do that before you talk monthly again. If they can't show the line item, I assume it's hiding. Sleeping on the number either way.

Fair point. Counterpoint: In Los Angeles, insurance quotes flipped a 2024 Toyota Tacoma comparison for me more than the sale price did. That's the part that actually changes the decision. When does it actually happen? Make the next action something you can finish this week. Not wiring anything in the meantime.
