Need advice: Miata soft-top clicking over small bumps

EcoWeekendCommunity StarterFeb 25, 20262024 Mazda MX-5 Miata ClubLas Vegas
Getting a repetitive click from around the roof/header area on rough pavement. Top seals look okay and it doesn't leak. Has anyone isolated a trim/latch/felt contact noise like this without replacing parts? Trying to diagnose before I book a shop.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata is losing coolant with no puddle. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Write the result down so the next test isn't a repeat of the last one. Only after sitting overnight so far.

OP update: scanned the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata again and still only have the one pending code, no new lights. I keep a notes app thread for this now.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. Two 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miatas can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Do that first. I refuse to clear codes until someone else sees them.

Log the conditions before you spend. Capture voltage while the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. On “miata soft-top clicking over small bumps,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Stop there until you know. I keep a notes app thread for this now.

Yes, with one caveat: Capture voltage while the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. On “miata soft-top clicking over small bumps,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata in Las Vegas. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. This is the version I'd tell a friend.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Move a coil or plug on the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Parts cannon is a personality type I try to avoid. Your commute and mine probably aren't the same, but the test still applies. Only after sitting overnight so far.

I went back under the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata and it only happens after a heat soak, not on a cold start. I'm keeping receipts and dates in one folder.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Capture voltage while the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. Only after sitting overnight so far.

Yes, with one caveat: Capture voltage while the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Not gospel, but it saved me a headache. Happens in gear, not in park, for what that's worth.

Fair point. Counterpoint: Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata does it — then decide on parts. Save the big job until that test fails. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. Make the next action something you can finish this week. This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

Not convinced that's the whole story. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata is losing coolant with no puddle. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Write the result down so the next test isn't a repeat of the last one. Your commute and mine probably aren't the same, but the test still applies. Checking again after work.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. Capture voltage while the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. Save the big job until that test fails. Time, temperature, and whether it's in gear are the notes that actually help a shop. Worth doing even if the car feels fine right now. Only after sitting overnight so far.

Not convinced that's the whole story. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata and see if the fault moves. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. If they can't show the line item, I assume it's hiding. If it repeats twice more I'll book time.

Ask what changed right before it started. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. I'd want a dollar figure or a measured spec, not 'should be fine.' Trying not to diagnose from the couch.

Might be overthinking it, but I'd rather overthink than overspend.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata and see if the fault moves. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. On “miata soft-top clicking over small bumps,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. Climate here is different, so treat that as a local data point. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

Tried a second charger / second scan and the story on the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata didn't change. Only after sitting overnight so far.

I'd push back a little: Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata does it — then decide on parts. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Post the numbers (or the code) and people can get more specific. Trying not to diagnose from the couch.
