Oil level dropping between changes — how much is too much?

TrackShopper30Community StarterOct 5, 20252022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XSEBoston / New England
I've started checking the dipstick every 500 miles and the level is definitely moving down between oil changes. No obvious puddles and I don't see smoke. At what point would you stop calling this normal consumption and start testing? I'm in Boston / New England. If I fix it I'll come back and update the thread.

Ask what changed right before it started. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2022 Toyota RAV4 and see if the fault moves. That's the branch I'd chase this week. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. Cold start is when I can actually reproduce it.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2022 Toyota RAV4, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Learned this the expensive way on a previous car. I'm keeping receipts and dates in one folder.

If it were in my driveway, capture voltage while the 2022 Toyota RAV4 is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Post the numbers (or the code) and people can get more specific. Doing the boring step first on purpose.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2022 Toyota RAV4 is losing coolant with no puddle. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. Happy to compare notes if your setup is different. Not trying to scare you — just skip the expensive first guess. This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

Asking because it changes the advice: A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2022 Toyota RAV4 is losing coolant with no puddle. Save the big job until that test fails. This is from a 2022 Toyota RAV4 in Boston / New England with 500 miles. Just my two cents from doing this recently. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.

Ask what changed right before it started. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2022 Toyota RAV4 catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. Make the next action something you can finish this week. No warning lights, which is why I'm documenting it.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. Move a coil or plug on the 2022 Toyota RAV4 if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. Save the big job until that test fails. This is from a 2022 Toyota RAV4 in Boston / New England with 500 miles. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. I'd rather pay for diagnosis than a second guess-repair.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Two 2022 Toyota RAV4s can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. Save the big job until that test fails. On “how much is too much,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Happy to compare notes if your setup is different. If the story changes I'll post the new data.

Not convinced that's the whole story. Capture voltage while the 2022 Toyota RAV4 is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Happy to compare notes if your setup is different. Worth doing even if the car feels fine right now. I'll update if anything new shows up.

Log the conditions before you spend. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2022 Toyota RAV4, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. On “how much is too much,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Happy to compare notes if your setup is different. If your situation is the opposite, ignore me. I refuse to clear codes until someone else sees them.

Parking it somewhere I can hear it better next time.

OP here — recorded a short video and noted speed, temp, and whether it was in gear. Cold start is when I can actually reproduce it.

Update: the cheap test changed the symptom, so I'm not throwing parts yet. I'm keeping receipts and dates in one folder.

I'd push back a little: Loaded-suspension checks on the 2022 Toyota RAV4 catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. Just my two cents from doing this recently. Your commute and mine probably aren't the same, but the test still applies. Heat soak after errands is the other window.

Fair point. Counterpoint: If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2022 Toyota RAV4, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. Save the big job until that test fails. Happy to compare notes if your setup is different. Worth doing even if the car feels fine right now. Heat soak after errands is the other window.

It did how much is too much twice this week, both times after sitting. No change in mileage feel. If the story changes I'll post the new data.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2022 Toyota RAV4 does it — then decide on parts. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. On “how much is too much,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 2022 Toyota RAV4 in Boston / New England with 500 miles. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. Climate here is different, so treat that as a local data point. I refuse to clear codes until someone else sees them.
