Lessee
The lessee is the party listed on a lease agreement who has the right to use the vehicle and the duty to make payments, maintain insurance, and follow mileage and wear rules. In a transfer, the outgoing lessee is the seller and the incoming lessee is the buyer. Knowing who holds this role at each stage clarifies liability and who must contact the leasing company.
Responsibilities of the lessee
Lessees pay the monthly bill, keep the vehicle insured, perform required maintenance, and return the car at lease end unless they buy it out. They must also report accidents and avoid unauthorized modifications.
Until a transfer is approved, the named lessee remains accountable for missed payments even if someone else is driving the car.
Why the role matters in a transfer
Only the leasing company can change who the official lessee is. Private agreements between individuals do not replace the name on the contract.
Sellers remain lessees until the lender confirms release. Buyers become lessees only after credit approval and signed assumption documents.
Lessee vs. co-lessee
Some contracts list a co-lessee or guarantor who shares obligation. Transfers may require consent from every party on the account.
If you co-signed but are not the primary driver, still verify how a transfer affects your liability before the primary lessee lists the vehicle.

FAQ
Is the lessee the owner of the car?
No. The lessor or lender typically holds title. The lessee has use rights under the contract for the lease term.
When does the new lessee take over payments?
Usually on the date the leasing company records the assumption, which may differ from the day keys are exchanged.
Can a business be the lessee?
Yes. Commercial leases follow similar transfer concepts but may have different approval requirements.
What happens if the lessee stops paying before transfer?
The account can fall delinquent, affecting credit and blocking approval. Clear past-due amounts before proceeding.
