Mileage Overage
Mileage overage occurs when the vehicle odometer exceeds the total miles allowed in the lease contract. Lessors charge a per-mile fee—often fifteen to thirty cents or more—for each mile over the cap. Overage can already be building before a transfer, and whoever holds the lease at return typically pays, making this a critical review point for takeover buyers.
How overage charges are calculated
Subtract allowed miles from actual mileage at return to get overage miles, then multiply by the contract rate. Some leases specify different tiers, but most use a single per-mile figure.
Overage is billed at lease end in addition to disposition and wear charges unless you buy out the car.
Overage risk when assuming a lease
A car near or above its allowance may still transfer, but the buyer inherits the overage bill at return unless they buy out early. Sellers sometimes offer incentives to offset projected overage.
Calculate projected miles through lease end using your commute and travel habits. A cheap payment loses appeal if overage adds thousands later.
Transfers with existing overage
Some lessors allow transfer even when slightly over cap; others require settlement first. Ask whether current overage appears on the account before application.
Document agreed handling of known overage in writing between buyer and seller, while remembering the lessor bills the named lessee.

FAQ
Can you prepay mileage overage?
Some lessors let you buy extra miles before lease end at a lower rate than standard overage. Ask if assumed leases qualify.
Who pays overage if the lease transfers mid-term?
The lessee at lease end usually pays. Prior miles count toward the same contract cap regardless of who drove them.
Does overage affect transfer approval?
Usually not directly, but extreme mileage may affect vehicle condition reviews or buyer willingness to assume.
Is overage rate negotiable at return?
Occasionally lessors offer modest reductions for prompt payment, but contract rates are generally fixed.
