How to Price a Used Car for Sale
Pricing is the fastest lever in a private sale. Set it too high and inquiries stop; too low and you leave money on the table. Start with market comps, adjust for mileage and condition, then decide how long you can wait. Many LookyLeasy sellers list slightly above target to preserve negotiation room—buyers expect some back-and-forth in 2026.
Build your comp set
Search the same year, make, model, and similar mileage within 100 miles. Note asking prices, not just sold rumors from forums.
Adjust for trim differences, AWD versus FWD, accident history, and option packages. A loaded trim can justify a premium; base models should not match top-trim comps.
Condition and history adjustments
Deduct for needed tires, brakes, or deferred maintenance buyers will quote immediately. Add modest premiums for one-owner, documented service, or transferable warranty.
Accidents do not always kill value, but undisclosed accidents kill trust. Price reflects reality, not wishful thinking.
When to reduce price
If you have fewer than one serious inquiry per week after two weeks, your price is likely above market. Drop in small steps ($500–$1,000) and refresh the listing.
Seasonality matters: convertibles soften in winter; AWD SUVs firm up before snow. Time reductions with demand, not frustration alone.

FAQ
Should I list higher than I expect to get?
A modest buffer (3–8%) is common for negotiation. Extreme overpricing wastes time and trains algorithms to hide your listing.
Do online instant offers set my price?
They set a floor reference. Private buyers often pay more than instant offers but less than dealer retail.
How does mileage affect price?
High mileage reduces value nonlinearly—low-mile examples command disproportionate premiums in popular models.
