How to Sell a Car With a Loan Payoff

You can sell a car you still finance, but the lender holds the title until the loan is satisfied. The buyer's payment must clear your payoff before you—or they—receive clear title. Banks, credit unions, and captive lenders each have slightly different procedures. Start with a 10-day payoff quote and plan the closing at a bank if possible.

Get a payoff quote

Request a per-diem payoff good for 10 days from your lender. Include any gap between sale price and payoff in your negotiation—you cannot keep sale proceeds until the loan clears.

If sale price is below payoff, you must bring cash to closing to cover negative equity.

Coordinate payment at closing

Certified funds payable to the lender, or a wire after verbal confirmation of account numbers, are standard. Some lenders accept buyer checks at a local branch with you present.

Never give the buyer the car before the lender confirms payoff and title release instructions.

Title release timing

Electronic titles may transfer in days; paper titles can take two to four weeks. Tell buyers the timeline upfront.

Provide a bill of sale and copy of payoff receipt immediately; follow up when title mails.

FAQ

Can the buyer pay my lender directly?

Yes, when structured with payoff authorization and verified funds. Confirm procedure with your lender.

What if I owe more than the car is worth?

You must cover the difference at closing or negotiate with the buyer to pay above market—rare but possible with highly motivated buyers.

Is this different from selling a leased car?

Yes. Leases require buyout before private sale unless the lessor allows third-party purchase programs.

Where should I list financed cars for sale?

List on LookyLeasy at /list-your-car and note that a lien payoff applies at closing.
