2006 Mazda RX-8 Sport — do shorter oil intervals actually make sense for my use?

2006 Mazda RX-8 Sport, about 22,000 miles. Most of my driving is short trips with a lot of idling, but the factory interval is pretty long. I'd rather not waste oil, but I also plan to keep the car past 150k. How would you set an interval based on use instead of just mileage? Any data points from owners would help. Ambient temp was about 72°F when I noticed it.

Write down what you already tried. A second data point from another 2006 Mazda RX-8 owner helps more than a generic diagnosis. That's where I'd start. Any freeze-frame data saved? Not trying to scare you — just skip the expensive first guess. Might be overthinking it, but I'd rather overthink than overspend.
