2023 Rivian R1T — short-trip driving and oil-change intervals

BatteryDIYerCommunity StarterSep 2, 20262023 Rivian R1T Quad-MotorCentral Jersey
The car gets lots of cold starts, idling and short trips with few long highway runs. The factory interval feels long for that use. How would you set an interval around duty cycle rather than just the odometer? I am in Central Jersey.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2023 Rivian R1T, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. That's the branch I'd chase this week. That's the whole play. Make the next action something you can finish this week. I refuse to clear codes until someone else sees them.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. Two 2023 Rivian R1Ts can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. This is from a 2023 Rivian R1T in Central Jersey. That's the whole play. Might be overthinking it, but I'd rather overthink than overspend.

OP update: scanned the 2023 Rivian R1T again and still only have the one pending code, no new lights. If it repeats twice more I'll book time.

Log the conditions before you spend. Capture voltage while the 2023 Rivian R1T is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. That's the branch I'd chase this week. On “short-trip driving and oil-change intervals,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Learned this the expensive way on a previous car. Might be overthinking it, but I'd rather overthink than overspend.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2023 Rivian R1T and see if the fault moves. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. I'd want a dollar figure or a measured spec, not 'should be fine.' A day of patience here is cheaper than a wrong part. I refuse to clear codes until someone else sees them.

OP update: scanned the 2023 Rivian R1T again and still only have the one pending code, no new lights. That's my plan before I call anyone.

Log the conditions before you spend. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2023 Rivian R1T catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. On “short-trip driving and oil-change intervals,” that was the fork that mattered for me. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. Heat soak after errands is the other window.

If it were in my driveway, move a coil or plug on the 2023 Rivian R1T if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Keep sale price, fees, and rate as three different conversations. I already checked the easy fluid levels.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2023 Rivian R1T, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Run the total, not the monthly, before you commit. Happens in gear, not in park, for what that's worth.

If it were in my driveway, two 2023 Rivian R1Ts can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. Save the big job until that test fails. Learned this the expensive way on a previous car. Wrote this up on my lunch break.

Fair point. Counterpoint: Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2023 Rivian R1T does it — then decide on parts. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. Time, temperature, and whether it's in gear are the notes that actually help a shop. A day of patience here is cheaper than a wrong part. Cold start is when I can actually reproduce it.

I hear you, though I'd still want a second check. Two 2023 Rivian R1Ts can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. I'd sleep better after that step, even if it finds nothing. I'll update if anything new shows up.

If it were in my driveway, a pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2023 Rivian R1T is losing coolant with no puddle. That's the branch I'd chase this week. This is from a 2023 Rivian R1T in Central Jersey. Time, temperature, and whether it's in gear are the notes that actually help a shop. Not trying to scare you — just skip the expensive first guess. Might be overthinking it, but I'd rather overthink than overspend.

Asking because it changes the advice: Get a real battery/charging test on the 2023 Rivian R1T, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2023 Rivian R1T, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. This is the filter I use when the thread starts repeating itself. Checking again after work.

Ask what changed right before it started. Move a coil or plug on the 2023 Rivian R1T if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. That's the branch I'd chase this week. I'd want a dollar figure or a measured spec, not 'should be fine.' I refuse to clear codes until someone else sees them.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2023 Rivian R1T does it — then decide on parts. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. That's the whole play. Your commute and mine probably aren't the same, but the test still applies. I'll update if anything new shows up.

It did short-trip driving and oil-change intervals twice this week, both times after sitting. No change in mileage feel. Cold start is when I can actually reproduce it.

Log the conditions before you spend. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2023 Rivian R1T, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. On “short-trip driving and oil-change intervals,” that was the fork that mattered for me. If they can't show the line item, I assume it's hiding. Wrote this up on my lunch break.
