2006 Mazda RX-8 Sport — project car budget is already getting away from me

Bought a cheap project because the shell was solid, and now the 'small stuff' list is longer than the drivetrain list. How do you guys prioritize safety/reliability, fabrication, cosmetics and power without rebuilding the car three times? I'd rather test this logically than start replacing parts. What am I missing?

I'd keep this practical. Verify the cheap/easy branch on the 2006 Mazda RX-8 before a big repair or a big spend. Then you'll know the next fork. Time, temperature, and whether it's in gear are the notes that actually help a shop. Doing the boring step first on purpose.

Write down what you already tried. A second data point from another 2006 Mazda RX-8 owner helps more than a generic diagnosis. Then you'll know the next fork. Happy to compare notes if your setup is different. If this is nothing, great. I want that in data.
