2012 Honda Pilot — private seller still has a loan on the car

ProjectNomad253Community StarterMar 13, 20262012 Honda Pilot EX-LCleveland
I like a privately listed car, but the seller still owes money and does not have a clear paper title in hand. What is the safest way to handle payoff, lien release, payment and possession? I am in Cleveland.

Walked a dealership this week on the 2012 Honda Pilot and the doc fee was the tell. Might be overthinking it, but I'd rather overthink than overspend.

I asked about private seller still has a loan on again and they still won't put GAP/add-ons on their own lines. Calling insurance in the morning before I reply to the desk.

OP update: I got two written quotes on the 2012 Honda Pilot and the out-the-door gap is bigger than the ads made it look. I asked for the buyer’s order in email, not a text.

PPI is scheduled. I'm not depositing until I see the 2012 Honda Pilot notes. This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

Private-party deals fail on paperwork, not vibes. Meet at a bank or dealer title office for the 2012 Honda Pilot, not a parking lot at night. Then you'll know the next fork. When does it actually happen? I'll update if anything new shows up.

Yes, with one caveat: A rushed deposit before you can inspect the 2012 Honda Pilot is enough reason to walk. I'd do that before spending real money. On “private seller still has a loan on,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Stop there until you know. If they get vague again I'm shopping the deal elsewhere.

I'd push back a little: Meet at a bank or dealer title office for the 2012 Honda Pilot, not a parking lot at night. I'd do that before spending real money. Run the total, not the monthly, before you commit. Doing the boring step first on purpose.

Title status is the whole conversation. A rushed deposit before you can inspect the 2012 Honda Pilot is enough reason to walk. I'd do that before spending real money. I'd want a dollar figure or a measured spec, not 'should be fine.' I'll post OTD once I have two apples-to-apples sheets.

I'd treat this like cash with a paper trail. Independent PPI on the 2012 Honda Pilot is cheap insurance versus a seller who “already had a friend look at it.” I'd do that before spending real money. On “private seller still has a loan on,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Just my two cents from doing this recently. If GAP is bundled I'm making them unbundle it.

Coming back with numbers — insurance in Cleveland changed the 2012 Honda Pilot comparison more than the sale price did. Not wiring anything in the meantime.

Private-party deals fail on paperwork, not vibes. Bill of sale, VIN, odometer, and names matching the title — I'd want all four on the 2012 Honda Pilot. That's where I'd start. Take it or leave it — that's what I'd do. Worth doing even if the car feels fine right now. Doing the boring step first on purpose.

Don't get cute with the meetup or the payment. If the 2012 Honda Pilot still shows a lien, coordinate payoff with the lender before any cash changes hands. That's where I'd start. Post the numbers (or the code) and people can get more specific. I'm keeping receipts and dates in one folder.
