2015 Volkswagen Golf — going one inch smaller for winter wheels — Los Angeles owner question

This started as a small annoyance and I finally decided to track it down. I want smaller winter wheels for more sidewall. Overall tire diameter can stay close, but I am worried about caliper and spoke clearance. What measurements should be checked before ordering? Interested in real owner experience more than guesses.

If it were mine, I would verify the cheap/easy branch on the 2015 Volkswagen Golf before committing to a big repair.

Fair, but in Los Angeles, I care more about the thing I will notice every day than the spec-sheet extra.
