2018 Kia Optima — metallic rattle for a few seconds after cold start

SleeperHauler371Community StarterSep 4, 20262018 Kia Optima EXSan Diego
2018 Kia Optima EX, about 124,500 miles. There is a short metallic rattle after the first cold start of the day, then it disappears once the engine settles. Warm restarts are quiet. Where would you start narrowing this down? If I figure it out I will update the thread.

Log the conditions before you spend. Capture voltage while the 2018 Kia Optima is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. On “metallic rattle for a few seconds after,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 2018 Kia Optima in San Diego with 124,500 miles. That's the sequence I'd use. I already checked the easy fluid levels.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2018 Kia Optima, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. Video is ugly but it shows the hesitation.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. Capture voltage while the 2018 Kia Optima is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. This is from a 2018 Kia Optima in San Diego with 124,500 miles. Any freeze-frame data saved? Heat soak after errands is the other window.

Tried a second charger / second scan and the story on the 2018 Kia Optima didn't change. That's my plan before I call anyone.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Move a coil or plug on the 2018 Kia Optima if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. On “metallic rattle for a few seconds after,” that was the fork that mattered for me. If they can't show the line item, I assume it's hiding. Not driving it hard until I know more.

Ask what changed right before it started. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2018 Kia Optima, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. If they can't show the line item, I assume it's hiding. Happens in gear, not in park, for what that's worth.

Same neighborhood, different next step: Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2018 Kia Optima and see if the fault moves. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. This is from a 2018 Kia Optima in San Diego with 124,500 miles. Write the result down so the next test isn't a repeat of the last one. Trying not to diagnose from the couch.

If it were in my driveway, swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2018 Kia Optima and see if the fault moves. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. When does it actually happen? Heat soak after errands is the other window.

I'd push back a little: A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2018 Kia Optima is losing coolant with no puddle. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. A shop burned me once by skipping that step. I'll update if anything new shows up.

OP update: scanned the 2018 Kia Optima again and still only have the one pending code, no new lights. Trying not to diagnose from the couch.

Log the conditions before you spend. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2018 Kia Optima, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Parking it somewhere I can hear it better next time.
