2020 BMW M2 — car died once at a light and restarted immediately

CityMom597Community StarterMar 2, 20262020 BMW M2 CompetitionSan Diego
The engine shut off at a stop once, restarted right away, and has been normal since. No warning stayed on. What data or checks would you prioritize before trusting it on a long trip? Interested in real owner experience more than guesses.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2020 BMW M2, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. Just my two cents from doing this recently. Your commute and mine probably aren't the same, but the test still applies. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.

OP update: scanned the 2020 BMW M2 again and still only have the one pending code, no new lights. Happens in gear, not in park, for what that's worth.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2020 BMW M2, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. Save the big job until that test fails. That's the whole play. Might be overthinking it, but I'd rather overthink than overspend.

If it were in my driveway, capture voltage while the 2020 BMW M2 is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. This is from a 2020 BMW M2 in San Diego. Time, temperature, and whether it's in gear are the notes that actually help a shop. I refuse to clear codes until someone else sees them.

Cleared nothing. I want service to see the alert on the 2020 BMW M2 first. If the story changes I'll post the new data.

Fair point. Counterpoint: If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2020 BMW M2, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. Wrote this up on my lunch break.

Ask what changed right before it started. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2020 BMW M2 is losing coolant with no puddle. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Not gospel, but it saved me a headache. Might be overthinking it, but I'd rather overthink than overspend.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2020 BMW M2, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. On “car died once at a light and,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 2020 BMW M2 in San Diego. That's the sequence I'd use. Wrote this up on my lunch break.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2020 BMW M2 catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. I wouldn't throw parts yet. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2020 BMW M2 is losing coolant with no puddle. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. No need to make it theatrical. I'll update if anything new shows up.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2020 BMW M2 is losing coolant with no puddle. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Run the total, not the monthly, before you commit. I've seen both outcomes, which is why I'd test instead of assume. Heat soak after errands is the other window.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. Move a coil or plug on the 2020 BMW M2 if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Happy to compare notes if your setup is different. Not trying to scare you — just skip the expensive first guess. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2020 BMW M2 and see if the fault moves. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. This is from a 2020 BMW M2 in San Diego. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. I refuse to clear codes until someone else sees them.

I hear you, though I'd still want a second check. Two 2020 BMW M2s can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. If you share a photo of the worksheet, easier to sanity-check. Checking again after work.

I went back under the 2020 BMW M2 and it only happens after a heat soak, not on a cold start. This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

Log the conditions before you spend. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2020 BMW M2, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. On “car died once at a light and,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Write the result down so the next test isn't a repeat of the last one. I'll poke at it this weekend.

Log the conditions before you spend. Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2020 BMW M2 does it — then decide on parts. That's the branch I'd chase this week. On “car died once at a light and,” that was the fork that mattered for me. If you share a photo of the worksheet, easier to sanity-check. I'll poke at it this weekend.
