2021 BMW X5 — catalyst efficiency code but car drives normally

ColdStartCamper961Community StarterMar 21, 20262021 BMW X5 xDrive40iDallas
A catalyst efficiency code came back after clearing once. The car drives normally and there are no misfire codes. Before condemning the catalytic converter, what sensor/data checks are worth doing? Mostly looking for the right next step.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2021 BMW X5, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Have you gotten a second quote in writing? I'll poke at it this weekend.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2021 BMW X5 is losing coolant with no puddle. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Write the result down so the next test isn't a repeat of the last one. I'll update if anything new shows up.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2021 BMW X5 and see if the fault moves. Save the big job until that test fails. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. No warning lights, which is why I'm documenting it.

I hear you, though I'd still want a second check. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2021 BMW X5 catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. On “catalyst efficiency code but car drives normally,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Learned this the expensive way on a previous car. Wrote this up on my lunch break.

OP update: scanned the 2021 BMW X5 again and still only have the one pending code, no new lights. Doing the boring step first on purpose.

If it were in my driveway, swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2021 BMW X5 and see if the fault moves. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. I'd want a dollar figure or a measured spec, not 'should be fine.' Heat soak after errands is the other window.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. Two 2021 BMW X5s can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. This is from a 2021 BMW X5 in Dallas. I'd want a dollar figure or a measured spec, not 'should be fine.' A day of patience here is cheaper than a wrong part. Video is ugly but it shows the hesitation.

It did catalyst efficiency code but car drives normally twice this week, both times after sitting. No change in mileage feel. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

If it were in my driveway, move a coil or plug on the 2021 BMW X5 if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. Video is ugly but it shows the hesitation.

Not gospel, but it saved me a headache. I'd rather be boring and correct. I'd rather pay for diagnosis than a second guess-repair.

Asking because it changes the advice: A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2021 BMW X5 is losing coolant with no puddle. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. Make the next action something you can finish this week. If this is nothing, great. I want that in data.

Tried a second charger / second scan and the story on the 2021 BMW X5 didn't change. This is the version I'd tell a friend.

Checked the easy stuff on the 2021 BMW X5 and found one clue worth chasing before I book a shop. Happens in gear, not in park, for what that's worth.
