2021 BMW X5 — no crank with full dash power, then it starts later

TowMechanicish588Community StarterDec 6, 20252021 BMW X5 xDrive40iDenver
Twice I have had full lights and accessories but no crank. After waiting a few minutes it starts normally. Battery terminals look clean. What would you want to measure during the actual failure? I am in Denver. Mileage is about 42,000.

Log the conditions before you spend. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2021 BMW X5, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. Save the big job until that test fails. On “no crank with full dash power, then,” that was the fork that mattered for me. I'd want a dollar figure or a measured spec, not 'should be fine.' I'm keeping receipts and dates in one folder.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Two 2021 BMW X5s can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. Save the big job until that test fails. On “no crank with full dash power, then,” that was the fork that mattered for me. I'd want a dollar figure or a measured spec, not 'should be fine.' If the story changes I'll post the new data.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2021 BMW X5, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. This is from a 2021 BMW X5 in Denver. Post the numbers (or the code) and people can get more specific. Doing the boring step first on purpose.

Cleared nothing. I want service to see the alert on the 2021 BMW X5 first. Wrote this up on my lunch break.

Ask what changed right before it started. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2021 BMW X5, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. That's the branch I'd chase this week. No need to make it theatrical. Make the next action something you can finish this week. Cold start is when I can actually reproduce it.

Log the conditions before you spend. Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2021 BMW X5 does it — then decide on parts. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. On “no crank with full dash power, then,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Run the total, not the monthly, before you commit. This is the version I'd tell a friend.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2021 BMW X5, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. Save the big job until that test fails. On “no crank with full dash power, then,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 2021 BMW X5 in Denver. Was this after sitting overnight? If your situation is the opposite, ignore me. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2021 BMW X5 does it — then decide on parts. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. On “no crank with full dash power, then,” that was the fork that mattered for me. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. Cold start is when I can actually reproduce it.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2021 BMW X5 does it — then decide on parts. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Keep sale price, fees, and rate as three different conversations. I'd rather pay for diagnosis than a second guess-repair.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Capture voltage while the 2021 BMW X5 is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. That's the branch I'd chase this week. This is from a 2021 BMW X5 in Denver. No need to make it theatrical. Next check is the cheap one I can do in a driveway.

Asking because it changes the advice: Move a coil or plug on the 2021 BMW X5 if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. Do that first. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

Same neighborhood, different next step: Move a coil or plug on the 2021 BMW X5 if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. That's the branch I'd chase this week. That's the sequence I'd use. This is the version I'd tell a friend.

Fair point. Counterpoint: Move a coil or plug on the 2021 BMW X5 if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Any freeze-frame data saved? A day of patience here is cheaper than a wrong part. Might be overthinking it, but I'd rather overthink than overspend.

Agree — and I'd add this: Loaded-suspension checks on the 2021 BMW X5 catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. If they can't show the line item, I assume it's hiding. Not trying to scare you — just skip the expensive first guess. Only after sitting overnight so far.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2021 BMW X5 is losing coolant with no puddle. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. This is from a 2021 BMW X5 in Denver. If they can't show the line item, I assume it's hiding. I'd rather be boring and correct. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. Capture voltage while the 2021 BMW X5 is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. That's my plan before I call anyone.
