2021 Mazda CX-5 — clunk when changing from reverse to drive

V8BuilderCommunity StarterApr 19, 20262021 Mazda CX-5 TurboNationwide
2021 Mazda CX-5 Turbo, about 86,500 miles. There is a single clunk when changing direction at low speed, especially reverse to drive. No vibration while cruising. What would you inspect first: mounts, driveshaft play, differential mounts or CV joints? I am trying to get the facts straight before spending money. What would you check next?

If it were in my driveway, a pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2021 Mazda CX-5 is losing coolant with no puddle. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. A shop burned me once by skipping that step. I'm keeping receipts and dates in one folder.

Ask what changed right before it started. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2021 Mazda CX-5 catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. This is from a 2021 Mazda CX-5 in Nationwide with 86,500 miles. Had a similar mess a couple years ago and that's what finally sorted it. I'll update if anything new shows up.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2021 Mazda CX-5, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. On “5 — clunk when changing from reverse,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Keep sale price, fees, and rate as three different conversations. Trying not to diagnose from the couch.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2021 Mazda CX-5 and see if the fault moves. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. I'll update if anything new shows up.

I went back under the 2021 Mazda CX-5 and it only happens after a heat soak, not on a cold start. Wrote this up on my lunch break.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2021 Mazda CX-5 and see if the fault moves. Save the big job until that test fails. If they can't show the line item, I assume it's hiding. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2021 Mazda CX-5 does it — then decide on parts. That's the branch I'd chase this week. A shop burned me once by skipping that step. Worth doing even if the car feels fine right now. Wrote this up on my lunch break.

Yes, with one caveat: Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2021 Mazda CX-5 and see if the fault moves. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. On “5 — clunk when changing from reverse,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Stop there until you know. Cold start is when I can actually reproduce it.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. Move a coil or plug on the 2021 Mazda CX-5 if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. A shop burned me once by skipping that step. I'm keeping receipts and dates in one folder.
