2022 Volvo XC90 — going one inch smaller for winter wheels

BatteryScout255Community StarterSep 4, 20262022 Volvo XC90 RechargeLas Vegas
I want smaller winter wheels for more sidewall. Overall tire diameter can stay close, but I am worried about caliper and spoke clearance. What measurements should be checked before ordering?

This is a climate question as much as a tire question. In Las Vegas, dedicated winters on the 2022 Volvo XC90 paid off more than I expected on ice, even on plowed roads. Then you'll know the next fork. On “going one inch smaller for winter wheels,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Not gospel, but it saved me a headache. Climate here is different, so treat that as a local data point. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.

That's a good start, but I wouldn't stop there. In Las Vegas, dedicated winters on the 2022 Volvo XC90 paid off more than I expected on ice, even on plowed roads. That's where I'd start. A shop burned me once by skipping that step. Video is ugly but it shows the hesitation.

Salt and cold mornings punish cheap shortcuts. Watch brake clearance and overall diameter if you downsize winter wheels on the 2022 Volvo XC90. I'd do that before spending real money. Had a similar mess a couple years ago and that's what finally sorted it. Might be overthinking it, but I'd rather overthink than overspend.

Salt and cold mornings punish cheap shortcuts. If Las Vegas only sees a few real storms, a good all-weather on the 2022 Volvo XC90 can be the saner daily. That's where I'd start. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. I'd sleep better after that step, even if it finds nothing. Checking again after work.

I'd rather pay for diagnosis than a second guess-repair.

I'd pick the setup I'll actually live with in slush. In Las Vegas, dedicated winters on the 2022 Volvo XC90 paid off more than I expected on ice, even on plowed roads. Then you'll know the next fork. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. Make the next action something you can finish this week. I keep a notes app thread for this now.
