Coolant is old by time but low mileage

EcoRunner34Community StarterJul 8, 20262021 Honda CR-V EX-LAtlanta
Car only has 32k miles but the coolant is several years old. Would you change it based on age alone? I'm trying to prioritize maintenance that matters rather than replacing everything early. Trying to diagnose before I book a shop.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2021 Honda CR-V does it — then decide on parts. That's the branch I'd chase this week. If you share a photo of the worksheet, easier to sanity-check. I'd rather be boring and correct. If it repeats twice more I'll book time.

If it were in my driveway, get a real battery/charging test on the 2021 Honda CR-V, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. That's the branch I'd chase this week. The universe charges extra for guessing. Not trying to scare you — just skip the expensive first guess. I'd rather pay for diagnosis than a second guess-repair.

Quick add on that: Two 2021 Honda CR-Vs can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. On “coolant is old by time but low,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Monthly payment math is how wallets disappear. I already checked the easy fluid levels.

Yes, with one caveat: Move a coil or plug on the 2021 Honda CR-V if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. This is from a 2021 Honda CR-V in Atlanta. Post the numbers (or the code) and people can get more specific. Trying not to diagnose from the couch.

OP here — recorded a short video and noted speed, temp, and whether it was in gear. If the story changes I'll post the new data.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2021 Honda CR-V, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Was this after sitting overnight? Make the next action something you can finish this week. That's my plan before I call anyone.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2021 Honda CR-V is losing coolant with no puddle. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. This is from a 2021 Honda CR-V in Atlanta. Write the result down so the next test isn't a repeat of the last one. Video is ugly but it shows the hesitation.

Asking because it changes the advice: Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2021 Honda CR-V does it — then decide on parts. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. Had a similar mess a couple years ago and that's what finally sorted it. Your commute and mine probably aren't the same, but the test still applies. Trying not to diagnose from the couch.

Ask what changed right before it started. Two 2021 Honda CR-Vs can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. Save the big job until that test fails. Keep sale price, fees, and rate as three different conversations. Not interested in a five-hour wait for a shrug.

That's a good start, but I wouldn't stop there. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2021 Honda CR-V, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. Cold start is when I can actually reproduce it.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Move a coil or plug on the 2021 Honda CR-V if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

Ask what changed right before it started. Capture voltage while the 2021 Honda CR-V is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. The universe charges extra for guessing. Checking again after work.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2021 Honda CR-V catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. Time, temperature, and whether it's in gear are the notes that actually help a shop. Worth doing even if the car feels fine right now. Wrote this up on my lunch break.

Happy to compare notes if your setup is different. If your situation is the opposite, ignore me. I'd rather pay for diagnosis than a second guess-repair.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. Two 2021 Honda CR-Vs can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. Save the big job until that test fails. This is from a 2021 Honda CR-V in Atlanta. Do that first. Next check is the cheap one I can do in a driveway.
