Need advice: Intermittent metallic rattle after cold start

WrenchWrenchCommunity StarterSep 4, 20262017 Nissan Altima 2.5 SVNashville
For the first few seconds after a cold start I hear a metallic rattle, then it disappears and won't come back once the engine is warm. No warning lights and it drives normally. Has anyone chased something like this without just replacing random parts? I'd rather test this logically than start replacing parts.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Two 2017 Nissan Altimas can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. Save the big job until that test fails. A shop burned me once by skipping that step. I'd rather pay for diagnosis than a second guess-repair.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2017 Nissan Altima and see if the fault moves. Save the big job until that test fails. This is from a 2017 Nissan Altima in Nashville. Keep sale price, fees, and rate as three different conversations. I've seen both outcomes, which is why I'd test instead of assume. This is the version I'd tell a friend.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2017 Nissan Altima, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. Save the big job until that test fails. On “intermittent metallic rattle after cold start,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. Climate here is different, so treat that as a local data point. I'll poke at it this weekend.

Ask what changed right before it started. Capture voltage while the 2017 Nissan Altima is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. Save the big job until that test fails. Post the numbers (or the code) and people can get more specific. This is the version I'd tell a friend.

If it were in my driveway, a pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2017 Nissan Altima is losing coolant with no puddle. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Happy to compare notes if your setup is different. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. Capture voltage while the 2017 Nissan Altima is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. Save the big job until that test fails. This is from a 2017 Nissan Altima in Nashville. That's the whole play. Parking it somewhere I can hear it better next time.

Log the conditions before you spend. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2017 Nissan Altima, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. Save the big job until that test fails. On “intermittent metallic rattle after cold start,” that was the fork that mattered for me. If you share a photo of the worksheet, easier to sanity-check. Climate here is different, so treat that as a local data point. Not driving it hard until I know more.

I went back under the 2017 Nissan Altima and it only happens after a heat soak, not on a cold start. This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2017 Nissan Altima and see if the fault moves. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. This is from a 2017 Nissan Altima in Nashville. I'd want a dollar figure or a measured spec, not 'should be fine.' Not trying to scare you — just skip the expensive first guess. I'll update if anything new shows up.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2017 Nissan Altima, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Time, temperature, and whether it's in gear are the notes that actually help a shop. Might be overthinking it, but I'd rather overthink than overspend.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Move a coil or plug on the 2017 Nissan Altima if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. On “intermittent metallic rattle after cold start,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Have you gotten a second quote in writing? Doing the boring step first on purpose.

Ask what changed right before it started. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2017 Nissan Altima catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Post the numbers (or the code) and people can get more specific. Wrote this up on my lunch break.

Trying not to diagnose from the couch.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2017 Nissan Altima does it — then decide on parts. Save the big job until that test fails. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

Cleared nothing. I want service to see the alert on the 2017 Nissan Altima first. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. Two 2017 Nissan Altimas can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Had a similar mess a couple years ago and that's what finally sorted it. This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

That's a good start, but I wouldn't stop there. Two 2017 Nissan Altimas can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. Checking again after work.

Doing the boring step first on purpose.

It did intermittent metallic rattle after cold start twice this week, both times after sitting. No change in mileage feel. If the story changes I'll post the new data.
