Question: Shudder at light throttle around 40 mph

WrenchGarageCommunity StarterJul 21, 20262018 Ford Mustang GTSan Diego
2018 Ford Mustang GT, about 14,500 miles. I get a light shudder at steady throttle around 35–45 mph. If I accelerate harder or lift off, it goes away. Trying to figure out whether this sounds more like torque-converter behavior, engine misfire, or tires. I'm in San Diego.

Ask what changed right before it started. Move a coil or plug on the 2018 Ford Mustang if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. Save the big job until that test fails. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. If it repeats twice more I'll book time.

It did shudder at light throttle around 40 mph twice this week, both times after sitting. No change in mileage feel. Not interested in a five-hour wait for a shrug.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2018 Ford Mustang, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. I'll poke at it this weekend.

OP update: scanned the 2018 Ford Mustang again and still only have the one pending code, no new lights. I refuse to clear codes until someone else sees them.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2018 Ford Mustang is losing coolant with no puddle. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. If they can't show the line item, I assume it's hiding. Worth doing even if the car feels fine right now. Doing the boring step first on purpose.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2018 Ford Mustang and see if the fault moves. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. Video is ugly but it shows the hesitation.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2018 Ford Mustang is losing coolant with no puddle. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. Just my two cents from doing this recently. I'd sleep better after that step, even if it finds nothing. Wrote this up on my lunch break.

I went back under the 2018 Ford Mustang and it only happens after a heat soak, not on a cold start. Trying not to diagnose from the couch.

Cleared nothing. I want service to see the alert on the 2018 Ford Mustang first. I keep a notes app thread for this now.

Agree — and I'd add this: Get a real battery/charging test on the 2018 Ford Mustang, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. On “shudder at light throttle around 40 mph,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Monthly payment math is how wallets disappear. If it repeats twice more I'll book time.

Quick add on that: Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2018 Ford Mustang and see if the fault moves. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Just my two cents from doing this recently. Not driving it hard until I know more.

If it were in my driveway, capture voltage while the 2018 Ford Mustang is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. Trying not to diagnose from the couch.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2018 Ford Mustang is losing coolant with no puddle. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. On “shudder at light throttle around 40 mph,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 2018 Ford Mustang in San Diego with 14,500 miles. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. I already checked the easy fluid levels.
