1968 Ford Mustang — going one inch smaller for winter wheels

1968 Ford Mustang Fastback, about 171,000 miles. I want smaller winter wheels for more sidewall. Overall tire diameter can stay close, but I am worried about caliper and spoke clearance. What measurements should be checked before ordering?

Ask what changed right before it started. Capture voltage while the 1968 Ford Mustang is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. This is from a 1968 Ford Mustang in Nashville with 171,000 miles. Stop there until you know. A day of patience here is cheaper than a wrong part. Not interested in a five-hour wait for a shrug.

Same neighborhood, different next step: Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 1968 Ford Mustang does it — then decide on parts. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. Happy to compare notes if your setup is different. Not trying to scare you — just skip the expensive first guess. If that fails I'll eat the diagnostic fee.
