1970 Datsun 240Z — going one inch smaller for winter wheels

BoostGuy18Community StarterJan 26, 20261970 Datsun 240ZBay Area
1970 Datsun 240Z, about 191,000 miles. I want smaller winter wheels for more sidewall. Overall tire diameter can stay close, but I am worried about caliper and spoke clearance. What measurements should be checked before ordering?

Salt and cold mornings punish cheap shortcuts. If Bay Area only sees a few real storms, a good all-weather on the 1970 Datsun 240Z can be the saner daily. I'd do that before spending real money. Not gospel, but it saved me a headache. I'll poke at it this weekend.

Salt and cold mornings punish cheap shortcuts. In Bay Area, dedicated winters on the 1970 Datsun 240Z paid off more than I expected on ice, even on plowed roads. I'd do that before spending real money. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. If that fails I'll eat the diagnostic fee.

That's a good start, but I wouldn't stop there. Watch brake clearance and overall diameter if you downsize winter wheels on the 1970 Datsun 240Z. Then you'll know the next fork. Run the total, not the monthly, before you commit. If this is nothing, great. I want that in data.

Following up on going one inch smaller for winter wheels: still happening, but I have better notes now. This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

Not convinced that's the whole story. In Bay Area, dedicated winters on the 1970 Datsun 240Z paid off more than I expected on ice, even on plowed roads. Then you'll know the next fork. Write the result down so the next test isn't a repeat of the last one. Happens in gear, not in park, for what that's worth.

Useful. I'll report back after I verify that on my 1970 Datsun 240Z. I'll update if anything new shows up.

I'd push back a little: If Bay Area only sees a few real storms, a good all-weather on the 1970 Datsun 240Z can be the saner daily. I'd do that before spending real money. Have you gotten a second quote in writing? Your commute and mine probably aren't the same, but the test still applies. Not interested in a five-hour wait for a shrug.

On “going one inch smaller for winter wheels,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Do that first. Climate here is different, so treat that as a local data point. Video is ugly but it shows the hesitation.

I'd pick the setup I'll actually live with in slush. If Bay Area only sees a few real storms, a good all-weather on the 1970 Datsun 240Z can be the saner daily. Then you'll know the next fork. On “going one inch smaller for winter wheels,” that was the fork that mattered for me. If you share a photo of the worksheet, easier to sanity-check. I keep a notes app thread for this now.

Thanks — that narrowed it. I'm going to try the simpler check on the 1970 Datsun 240Z first. Might be overthinking it, but I'd rather overthink than overspend.

This is a climate question as much as a tire question. If Bay Area only sees a few real storms, a good all-weather on the 1970 Datsun 240Z can be the saner daily. That's where I'd start. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. Doing the boring step first on purpose.

Happy to compare notes if your setup is different. A day of patience here is cheaper than a wrong part. I already checked the easy fluid levels.

I'm keeping receipts and dates in one folder.

I'd want a dollar figure or a measured spec, not 'should be fine.' Not trying to scare you — just skip the expensive first guess. Not driving it hard until I know more.
