1990 Ford F-150 — open carrier or enclosed for a normal enthusiast car?

NewCarPilot152Community StarterApr 10, 20261990 Ford F-150 XLTLos Angeles
1990 Ford F-150 XLT, about 192,500 miles. The car is valuable to me but not exotic. Enclosed transport costs noticeably more. When is the extra protection actually worth paying for versus a reputable open carrier?

I would not stare at the monthly. In Los Angeles, insurance quotes flipped a 1990 Ford F-150 comparison for me more than the sale price did. Then the comparison gets honest. No need to make it theatrical. Make the next action something you can finish this week. Not wiring anything in the meantime.

Same neighborhood, different next step: Ask for out-the-door on the 1990 Ford F-150 with fees, add-ons, and rate on separate lines. I'd rather lose the car than buy a foggy deal. Run the total, not the monthly, before you commit. I'd rather be boring and correct. This is the version I'd tell a friend.

Don't send a deposit on a phone quote. If one piece looks too good on the 1990 Ford F-150, hunt doc fees, accessories, and the APR next. Then the comparison gets honest. Had a similar mess a couple years ago and that's what finally sorted it. If the title is messy I'm out, full stop.

Insurance and tax belong in the comparison, not as a surprise. Keep sale price, trade, and financing split on the 1990 Ford F-150 so a “good payment” cannot bury a worse deal. I'd rather lose the car than buy a foggy deal. On “150 — open carrier or enclosed for,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Had a similar mess a couple years ago and that's what finally sorted it. If GAP is bundled I'm making them unbundle it.

Compare apples to apples or you'll get spun. Ask for out-the-door on the 1990 Ford F-150 with fees, add-ons, and rate on separate lines. I'd rather lose the car than buy a foggy deal. This is from a 1990 Ford F-150 in Los Angeles with 192,500 miles. Take it or leave it — that's what I'd do. This is the version I'd tell a friend.
