2007 Porsche Cayman — private seller still has a loan on the car

2007 Porsche Cayman S, about 164,500 miles. I like a privately listed car, but the seller still owes money and does not have a clear paper title in hand. What is the safest way to handle payoff, lien release, payment and possession? I would rather test this logically than replace parts.

Don't get cute with the meetup or the payment. If the 2007 Porsche Cayman still shows a lien, coordinate payoff with the lender before any cash changes hands. That's where I'd start. Stop there until you know. Calling insurance in the morning before I reply to the desk.

OP update: I got two written quotes on the 2007 Porsche Cayman and the out-the-door gap is bigger than the ads made it look. That's my plan before I call anyone.

Private-party deals fail on paperwork, not vibes. Meet at a bank or dealer title office for the 2007 Porsche Cayman, not a parking lot at night. I'd do that before spending real money. Run the total, not the monthly, before you commit. I've seen both outcomes, which is why I'd test instead of assume. Doc fee is the line I'm watching.

Not convinced that's the whole story. If the 2007 Porsche Cayman still shows a lien, coordinate payoff with the lender before any cash changes hands. Then you'll know the next fork. Did the worksheet show tax yet? If the title is messy I'm out, full stop.

Title status is the whole conversation. Independent PPI on the 2007 Porsche Cayman is cheap insurance versus a seller who “already had a friend look at it.” That's where I'd start. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. I'll post OTD once I have two apples-to-apples sheets.
