OP here. Still looking, but I'm waiting on inspection notes before I send money on the 2007 Porsche Cayman. Doc fee is the line I'm watching.

Title status is the whole conversation. If the 2007 Porsche Cayman still shows a lien, coordinate payoff with the lender before any cash changes hands. Then you'll know the next fork. That's the whole play. This is the version I'd tell a friend.

Same neighborhood, different next step: A rushed deposit before you can inspect the 2007 Porsche Cayman is enough reason to walk. That's where I'd start. On “safest way to handle a test drive,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 2007 Porsche Cayman in Denver with 185,500 miles. That's the sequence I'd use. Climate here is different, so treat that as a local data point. I screenshotted the quote for later.

I'd push back a little: If the 2007 Porsche Cayman still shows a lien, coordinate payoff with the lender before any cash changes hands. That's where I'd start. Have you gotten a second quote in writing? That's coming from doing this as an owner, not a shop. Not wiring anything in the meantime.
