2014 Ford Mustang — steering wheel shakes only under highway braking

GarageDetailer790Community StarterApr 29, 20262014 Ford Mustang GTSan Antonio
2014 Ford Mustang GT, about 120,000 miles. Cruising is smooth, but braking from highway speed makes the steering wheel shake. Pads still have material. Would you start with rotor runout/thickness variation, hub condition or suspension bushings? I am in San Antonio.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2014 Ford Mustang catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Had a similar mess a couple years ago and that's what finally sorted it. I'd sleep better after that step, even if it finds nothing. If that fails I'll eat the diagnostic fee.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2014 Ford Mustang, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.

That's a good start, but I wouldn't stop there. Move a coil or plug on the 2014 Ford Mustang if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Have you gotten a second quote in writing? Cold start is when I can actually reproduce it.

Log the conditions before you spend. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2014 Ford Mustang catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. On “steering wheel shakes only under highway braking,” that was the fork that mattered for me. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. This is the filter I use when the thread starts repeating itself. If the story changes I'll post the new data.

If it were in my driveway, if a shop can't duplicate it on the 2014 Ford Mustang, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. Next check is the cheap one I can do in a driveway.

If it were in my driveway, swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2014 Ford Mustang and see if the fault moves. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. Not gospel, but it saved me a headache. Only after sitting overnight so far.

It did steering wheel shakes only under highway braking twice this week, both times after sitting. No change in mileage feel. Not interested in a five-hour wait for a shrug.

Ask what changed right before it started. Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2014 Ford Mustang does it — then decide on parts. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. That's coming from doing this as an owner, not a shop. I refuse to clear codes until someone else sees them.

OP update: scanned the 2014 Ford Mustang again and still only have the one pending code, no new lights. If the story changes I'll post the new data.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2014 Ford Mustang, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. Save the big job until that test fails. Not gospel, but it saved me a headache. I've seen both outcomes, which is why I'd test instead of assume. I already checked the easy fluid levels.
