2016 Audi A4 — steering wheel shakes only under highway braking

Cruising is smooth, but braking from highway speed makes the steering wheel shake. Pads still have material. Would you start with rotor runout/thickness variation, hub condition or suspension bushings?

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. Move a coil or plug on the 2016 Audi A4 if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Stop there until you know. A day of patience here is cheaper than a wrong part. Wrote this up on my lunch break.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2016 Audi A4 is losing coolant with no puddle. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. Not driving it hard until I know more.

Checked the easy stuff on the 2016 Audi A4 and found one clue worth chasing before I book a shop. Not driving it hard until I know more.

If it were in my driveway, move a coil or plug on the 2016 Audi A4 if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. This is from a 2016 Audi A4 in Orange County. That's the whole play. I'd sleep better after that step, even if it finds nothing. If this is nothing, great. I want that in data.

If it were in my driveway, if a shop can't duplicate it on the 2016 Audi A4, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Do that first. I'd rather be boring and correct. I keep a notes app thread for this now.

Ask what changed right before it started. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2016 Audi A4 catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. That's coming from doing this as an owner, not a shop. I'll poke at it this weekend.

OP update: scanned the 2016 Audi A4 again and still only have the one pending code, no new lights. Heat soak after errands is the other window.

Log the conditions before you spend. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2016 Audi A4, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. That's the branch I'd chase this week. On “steering wheel shakes only under highway braking,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Do that first. That's my plan before I call anyone.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Capture voltage while the 2016 Audi A4 is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Just my two cents from doing this recently. Your commute and mine probably aren't the same, but the test still applies. I'm keeping receipts and dates in one folder.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2016 Audi A4, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. That's the branch I'd chase this week. On “steering wheel shakes only under highway braking,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Not gospel, but it saved me a headache. That's my plan before I call anyone.

Fair point. Counterpoint: Two 2016 Audi A4s can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. Had a similar mess a couple years ago and that's what finally sorted it. Checking again after work.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2016 Audi A4, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. Save the big job until that test fails. No need to make it theatrical. This is the version I'd tell a friend.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2016 Audi A4 is losing coolant with no puddle. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Had a similar mess a couple years ago and that's what finally sorted it. I'm keeping receipts and dates in one folder.
