Delayed engagement into Drive when cold

HybridPilot80Community StarterSep 4, 20262023 Audi S5 SportbackMichigan
On cold mornings, shifting from Park to Drive takes a second or two before the car actually engages. Once warm it's instant and shifts fine. Fluid level/condition is my first thought, but what else should I check? I'm in Michigan. Trying to diagnose before I book a shop.

Ask what changed right before it started. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2023 Audi S5, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Take it or leave it — that's what I'd do. No warning lights, which is why I'm documenting it.

I'd push back a little: Move a coil or plug on the 2023 Audi S5 if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Just my two cents from doing this recently. If the story changes I'll post the new data.

Agree — and I'd add this: If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2023 Audi S5, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. Save the big job until that test fails. This is from a 2023 Audi S5 in Michigan. Take it or leave it — that's what I'd do. Not driving it hard until I know more.

OP update: scanned the 2023 Audi S5 again and still only have the one pending code, no new lights. Video is ugly but it shows the hesitation.

I went back under the 2023 Audi S5 and it only happens after a heat soak, not on a cold start. Happens in gear, not in park, for what that's worth.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2023 Audi S5 catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. Had a similar mess a couple years ago and that's what finally sorted it. I keep a notes app thread for this now.

It did delayed engagement into drive when cold twice this week, both times after sitting. No change in mileage feel. Video is ugly but it shows the hesitation.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2023 Audi S5 does it — then decide on parts. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. Not gospel, but it saved me a headache. Wrote this up on my lunch break.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2023 Audi S5 catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. A shop burned me once by skipping that step. If this is nothing, great. I want that in data.

Log the conditions before you spend. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2023 Audi S5 and see if the fault moves. That's the branch I'd chase this week. On “delayed engagement into drive when cold,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Write the result down so the next test isn't a repeat of the last one. This is the filter I use when the thread starts repeating itself. Parking it somewhere I can hear it better next time.

If it were in my driveway, loaded-suspension checks on the 2023 Audi S5 catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Keep sale price, fees, and rate as three different conversations. Checking again after work.
