2018 BMW 340i — surface rust underneath a winter daily

2018 BMW 340i xDrive, about 96,000 miles. There is early surface rust on brackets, fasteners and seams underneath, but nothing structural. For a salt-belt car, what treatment slows it down without creating a hard coating that traps moisture?

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2018 BMW 340i catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. That's the branch I'd chase this week. On “surface rust underneath a winter daily,” that was the fork that mattered for me. If they can't show the line item, I assume it's hiding. Happens in gear, not in park, for what that's worth.

That's a good start, but I wouldn't stop there. Capture voltage while the 2018 BMW 340i is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Time, temperature, and whether it's in gear are the notes that actually help a shop. Doing the boring step first on purpose.

If it were in my driveway, a pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2018 BMW 340i is losing coolant with no puddle. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. That's the sequence I'd use. Might be overthinking it, but I'd rather overthink than overspend.
