2018 Ford F-150 — cheap project has enough margin to fix and resell? — buyer question from Orange County

RoadWrench173Community StarterMay 30, 20262018 Ford F-150 XLT 2.7 EcoBoostOrange County
2018 Ford F-150 XLT 2.7 EcoBoost, about 34,500 miles. I found a running car with cosmetic damage and deferred maintenance at a low price. Before treating it as a flip, how do you budget hidden repairs, title/registration, taxes, transport and selling time? I am trying to get the facts straight before spending money. What would you check next?

Walk if they won't put it on a buyer’s order. If one piece looks too good on the 2018 Ford F-150, hunt doc fees, accessories, and the APR next. That's the part that actually changes the decision. Do that first. Doc fee is the line I'm watching.

Walked a dealership this week on the 2018 Ford F-150 (34,500 miles) and the doc fee was the tell. This is the version I'd tell a friend.

Update from me: I finally have sale price, fees, and trade on separate lines for the 2018 Ford F-150. Might be overthinking it, but I'd rather overthink than overspend.

I'd slow the salesperson down here. I would not wire money until I've seen the 2018 Ford F-150 and the title situation in person or via a trusted PPI. That's the part that actually changes the decision. Take it or leave it — that's what I'd do. A day of patience here is cheaper than a wrong part. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

I'd slow the salesperson down here. If one piece looks too good on the 2018 Ford F-150, hunt doc fees, accessories, and the APR next. Then the comparison gets honest. Learned this the expensive way on a previous car. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

OP update: I got two written quotes on the 2018 Ford F-150 and the out-the-door gap is bigger than the ads made it look. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.

The trap is a pretty payment hiding a worse car price. If they're pushing term length to shrink the payment, the 2018 Ford F-150 price probably got worse. Then the comparison gets honest. Not gospel, but it saved me a headache. Doc fee is the line I'm watching.

I'd slow the salesperson down here. Two 2018 Ford F-150 quotes only help if both include tax, title, and the same options. That's the part that actually changes the decision. Stop there until you know. A day of patience here is cheaper than a wrong part. Calling insurance in the morning before I reply to the desk.

Insurance and tax belong in the comparison, not as a surprise. GAP, paint, and nitrogen are optional until you run the 2018 Ford F-150 numbers without them. If they balk, that's your answer. On “150 — cheap project has enough margin,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Learned this the expensive way on a previous car. Wrote this up on my lunch break.

Don't send a deposit on a phone quote. In Orange County, insurance quotes flipped a 2018 Ford F-150 comparison for me more than the sale price did. Screenshot the worksheet if you can. Not gospel, but it saved me a headache. If the story changes I'll post the new data.

Insurance and tax belong in the comparison, not as a surprise. Call your insurer in Orange County before you fall in love with the 2018 Ford F-150. I'd rather lose the car than buy a foggy deal. On “150 — cheap project has enough margin,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Happy to compare notes if your setup is different. If your situation is the opposite, ignore me. If GAP is bundled I'm making them unbundle it.

I hear you, though I'd still want a second check. Call your insurer in Orange County before you fall in love with the 2018 Ford F-150. Do that before you talk monthly again. Happy to compare notes if your setup is different. Sleeping on the number either way.

Hard-won lesson from my last deal: Call your insurer in Orange County before you fall in love with the 2018 Ford F-150. If they balk, that's your answer. On “150 — cheap project has enough margin,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Happy to compare notes if your setup is different. If your situation is the opposite, ignore me. I screenshotted the quote for later.

Insurance and tax belong in the comparison, not as a surprise. A written buyer’s order on the 2018 Ford F-150 is worth more than any verbal “we’ll make it work.” If they balk, that's your answer. On “150 — cheap project has enough margin,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Run the total, not the monthly, before you commit. Wrote this up on my lunch break.

If I were shopping this, if they're pushing term length to shrink the payment, the 2018 Ford F-150 price probably got worse. That's the part that actually changes the decision. This is from a 2018 Ford F-150 in Orange County with 34,500 miles. No need to make it theatrical. Going to compare one more dealer before I decide.
