2018 Mitsubishi Outlander — coolant is old by age but mileage is low

BrakeGuy426Community StarterMar 7, 20262018 Mitsubishi Outlander SENationwide
2018 Mitsubishi Outlander SE, about 142,500 miles. The vehicle has relatively few miles but the coolant is several years old. I am trying to prioritize maintenance by actual risk. Would you replace based on time alone? If I figure it out I will update the thread.

Ask what changed right before it started. Move a coil or plug on the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. That's the branch I'd chase this week. When does it actually happen? This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

Ask what changed right before it started. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Stop there until you know. I'll update if anything new shows up.

Ask what changed right before it started. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander and see if the fault moves. That's the branch I'd chase this week. If they can't show the line item, I assume it's hiding. Checking again after work.

That's a good start, but I wouldn't stop there. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. That's the whole play. Not interested in a five-hour wait for a shrug.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander does it — then decide on parts. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. On “coolant is old by age but mileage,” that was the fork that mattered for me. That's the whole play. No warning lights, which is why I'm documenting it.

Agree — and I'd add this: Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander does it — then decide on parts. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. This is from a 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander in Nationwide with 142,500 miles. Do that first. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Capture voltage while the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. That's the whole play. This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

Same neighborhood, different next step: Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander does it — then decide on parts. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. On “coolant is old by age but mileage,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Do that first. Trying not to diagnose from the couch.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander is losing coolant with no puddle. Save the big job until that test fails. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. If it repeats twice more I'll book time.

Log the conditions before you spend. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. That's the branch I'd chase this week. On “coolant is old by age but mileage,” that was the fork that mattered for me. That's the whole play. This is the filter I use when the thread starts repeating itself. I'll poke at it this weekend.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. Two 2018 Mitsubishi Outlanders can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. That's the whole play. This is the version I'd tell a friend.
