2018 Subaru Forester — should I negotiate the trade and purchase separately?

I have a trade with some equity and I am buying another car. Dealer wants to talk only in payment numbers. Would you settle sale price first, then trade value, then financing so each piece stays visible? I am in California.

If I were shopping this, two 2018 Subaru Forester quotes only help if both include tax, title, and the same options. Then the comparison gets honest. Stop there until you know. This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

Treat this like a math problem, not a vibe. A written buyer’s order on the 2018 Subaru Forester is worth more than any verbal “we’ll make it work.” Do that before you talk monthly again. This is from a 2018 Subaru Forester in California. Was this after sitting overnight? Going to re-read the worksheet tonight.

OP here. Still looking, but I'm waiting on inspection notes before I send money on the 2018 Subaru Forester. If they only talk monthly I'm walking.

Asking because it changes the advice: If one piece looks too good on the 2018 Subaru Forester, hunt doc fees, accessories, and the APR next. Then the comparison gets honest. Write the result down so the next test isn't a repeat of the last one. Make the next action something you can finish this week. I'm keeping receipts and dates in one folder.

Treat this like a math problem, not a vibe. GAP, paint, and nitrogen are optional until you run the 2018 Subaru Forester numbers without them. If they balk, that's your answer. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. Sleeping on the number either way.
