2018 Volvo S90 — going one inch smaller for winter wheels

LongMilesMechanicish836Community StarterJan 13, 20262018 Volvo S90 T6Dallas
2018 Volvo S90 T6, about 141,500 miles. I want smaller winter wheels for more sidewall. Overall tire diameter can stay close, but I am worried about caliper and spoke clearance. What measurements should be checked before ordering?

I'd pick the setup I'll actually live with in slush. Watch brake clearance and overall diameter if you downsize winter wheels on the 2018 Volvo S90. Then you'll know the next fork. This is from a 2018 Volvo S90 in Dallas with 141,500 miles. Stop there until you know. Not trying to scare you — just skip the expensive first guess. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.

Salt and cold mornings punish cheap shortcuts. If Dallas only sees a few real storms, a good all-weather on the 2018 Volvo S90 can be the saner daily. Then you'll know the next fork. On “going one inch smaller for winter wheels,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 2018 Volvo S90 in Dallas with 141,500 miles. A shop burned me once by skipping that step. I'd rather pay for diagnosis than a second guess-repair.

This is a climate question as much as a tire question. Watch brake clearance and overall diameter if you downsize winter wheels on the 2018 Volvo S90. Then you'll know the next fork. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. Heat soak after errands is the other window.

OP update: I tried the earlier suggestion and it only happens under that one condition. Next check is the cheap one I can do in a driveway.

I'd push back a little: Watch brake clearance and overall diameter if you downsize winter wheels on the 2018 Volvo S90. That's where I'd start. This is from a 2018 Volvo S90 in Dallas with 141,500 miles. Any freeze-frame data saved? If that fails I'll eat the diagnostic fee.

I'd pick the setup I'll actually live with in slush. In Dallas, dedicated winters on the 2018 Volvo S90 paid off more than I expected on ice, even on plowed roads. Then you'll know the next fork. This is from a 2018 Volvo S90 in Dallas with 141,500 miles. Learned this the expensive way on a previous car. Heat soak after errands is the other window.

If your situation is the opposite, ignore me. I keep a notes app thread for this now.

I parked the 2018 Volvo S90 and wrote down what I already tested so I'm not repeating myself. Cold start is when I can actually reproduce it.

Useful. I'll report back after I verify that on my 2018 Volvo S90. Wrote this up on my lunch break.
