2021 BMW X5 — battery dies after the car sits for a weekend

RoadTripDIYerCommunity StarterMay 30, 20262021 BMW X5 xDrive40iSalt Lake City
2021 BMW X5 xDrive40i, about 38,000 miles. Battery passes a quick test and charging voltage looks normal, but after two or three days parked the car sometimes will not crank.

Ask what changed right before it started. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2021 BMW X5, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. This is from a 2021 BMW X5 in Salt Lake City with 38,000 miles. No need to make it theatrical. A day of patience here is cheaper than a wrong part. Next check is the cheap one I can do in a driveway.

Checked the easy stuff on the 2021 BMW X5 and found one clue worth chasing before I book a shop. If the story changes I'll post the new data.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2021 BMW X5, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. On “battery dies after the car sits for,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 2021 BMW X5 in Salt Lake City with 38,000 miles. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. Not interested in a five-hour wait for a shrug.

If it were in my driveway, write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2021 BMW X5 does it — then decide on parts. That's the branch I'd chase this week. If they can't show the line item, I assume it's hiding. Not trying to scare you — just skip the expensive first guess. This is the version I'd tell a friend.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2021 BMW X5, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Run the total, not the monthly, before you commit. Next check is the cheap one I can do in a driveway.

If it were in my driveway, capture voltage while the 2021 BMW X5 is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Just my two cents from doing this recently. I'd sleep better after that step, even if it finds nothing. Happens in gear, not in park, for what that's worth.
RoadTripDIYerCommunity StarterCommunity StarterMay 31, 2026permalink
OP here — recorded a short video and noted speed, temp, and whether it was in gear. I'm keeping receipts and dates in one folder.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2021 BMW X5, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. This is from a 2021 BMW X5 in Salt Lake City with 38,000 miles. When does it actually happen? I'd rather pay for diagnosis than a second guess-repair.

Ask what changed right before it started. Move a coil or plug on the 2021 BMW X5 if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. That's the whole play. Make the next action something you can finish this week. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

Tried a second charger / second scan and the story on the 2021 BMW X5 didn't change. Doing the boring step first on purpose.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2021 BMW X5, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. Save the big job until that test fails. Was this after sitting overnight? That's coming from doing this as an owner, not a shop. Parking it somewhere I can hear it better next time.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2021 BMW X5 and see if the fault moves. That's the branch I'd chase this week. On “battery dies after the car sits for,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 2021 BMW X5 in Salt Lake City with 38,000 miles. Not gospel, but it saved me a headache. Wrote this up on my lunch break.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2021 BMW X5 catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. A shop burned me once by skipping that step. If it repeats twice more I'll book time.

Fair point. Counterpoint: A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2021 BMW X5 is losing coolant with no puddle. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. This is from a 2021 BMW X5 in Salt Lake City with 38,000 miles. Did the worksheet show tax yet? Happens in gear, not in park, for what that's worth.

It did battery dies after the car sits for twice this week, both times after sitting. No change in mileage feel. Checking again after work.

Not convinced that's the whole story. Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2021 BMW X5 does it — then decide on parts. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess.
