2022 Volkswagen GTI — a/C is cold on the highway but warm at stoplights

NoMarkupDaily893Community StarterMay 28, 20262022 Volkswagen GTI SENorthern Virginia
2022 Volkswagen GTI SE, about 59,500 miles. The A/C works well with road speed but gets noticeably warmer at long lights, then cools again almost immediately once moving. Does that point more toward airflow/fan behavior than refrigerant level?

Update: the cheap test changed the symptom, so I'm not throwing parts yet. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2022 Volkswagen GTI, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. Time, temperature, and whether it's in gear are the notes that actually help a shop. Only after sitting overnight so far.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2022 Volkswagen GTI, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. Save the big job until that test fails. Any freeze-frame data saved? Make the next action something you can finish this week. I'm keeping receipts and dates in one folder.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. Capture voltage while the 2022 Volkswagen GTI is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. That's the branch I'd chase this week. When does it actually happen? I already checked the easy fluid levels.

If it were in my driveway, move a coil or plug on the 2022 Volkswagen GTI if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. I'd rather pay for diagnosis than a second guess-repair.

If it were in my driveway, write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2022 Volkswagen GTI does it — then decide on parts. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. That's the sequence I'd use. I'd rather pay for diagnosis than a second guess-repair.

Ask what changed right before it started. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2022 Volkswagen GTI, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. That's the branch I'd chase this week. If they can't show the line item, I assume it's hiding. No warning lights, which is why I'm documenting it.

Was this after sitting overnight? A day of patience here is cheaper than a wrong part. I keep a notes app thread for this now.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Move a coil or plug on the 2022 Volkswagen GTI if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. On “a/c is cold on the highway but,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Stop there until you know. If your situation is the opposite, ignore me. Doing the boring step first on purpose.

Agree — and I'd add this: Capture voltage while the 2022 Volkswagen GTI is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. On “a/c is cold on the highway but,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 2022 Volkswagen GTI in Northern Virginia with 59,500 miles. Stop there until you know. If the story changes I'll post the new data.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2022 Volkswagen GTI does it — then decide on parts. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Write the result down so the next test isn't a repeat of the last one. Your commute and mine probably aren't the same, but the test still applies. No warning lights, which is why I'm documenting it.

Same neighborhood, different next step: Get a real battery/charging test on the 2022 Volkswagen GTI, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. That's the branch I'd chase this week. On “a/c is cold on the highway but,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 2022 Volkswagen GTI in Northern Virginia with 59,500 miles. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. This is the filter I use when the thread starts repeating itself. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Two 2022 Volkswagen GTIs can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Run the total, not the monthly, before you commit. This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.
