2023 Subaru Outback — catalyst efficiency code but car drives normally

BoostCamper418Community StarterSep 1, 20262023 Subaru Outback WildernessWashington DC
2023 Subaru Outback Wilderness, about 61,000 miles. A catalyst efficiency code came back after clearing once. The car drives normally and there are no misfire codes. Before condemning the catalytic converter, what sensor/data checks are worth doing? I am trying to get the facts straight before spending money.

Log the conditions before you spend. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2023 Subaru Outback, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. Save the big job until that test fails. On “catalyst efficiency code but car drives normally,” that was the fork that mattered for me. I'd want a dollar figure or a measured spec, not 'should be fine.' If your situation is the opposite, ignore me. I keep a notes app thread for this now.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. Capture voltage while the 2023 Subaru Outback is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. Save the big job until that test fails. Learned this the expensive way on a previous car. Not driving it hard until I know more.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2023 Subaru Outback is losing coolant with no puddle. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. Keep sale price, fees, and rate as three different conversations. Doing the boring step first on purpose.

If it were in my driveway, if a shop can't duplicate it on the 2023 Subaru Outback, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. Save the big job until that test fails. This is from a 2023 Subaru Outback in Washington DC with 61,000 miles. A shop burned me once by skipping that step. Not trying to scare you — just skip the expensive first guess. Only after sitting overnight so far.

If it were in my driveway, two 2023 Subaru Outbacks can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. This is from a 2023 Subaru Outback in Washington DC with 61,000 miles. If they can't show the line item, I assume it's hiding. Not trying to scare you — just skip the expensive first guess. I'll poke at it this weekend.

Cleared nothing. I want service to see the alert on the 2023 Subaru Outback first. Not driving it hard until I know more.

Ask what changed right before it started. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2023 Subaru Outback, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. That's the branch I'd chase this week. If they can't show the line item, I assume it's hiding. A day of patience here is cheaper than a wrong part. Video is ugly but it shows the hesitation.

Ask what changed right before it started. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2023 Subaru Outback is losing coolant with no puddle. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. No need to make it theatrical. Cold start is when I can actually reproduce it.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. Capture voltage while the 2023 Subaru Outback is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Had a similar mess a couple years ago and that's what finally sorted it. That's my plan before I call anyone.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2023 Subaru Outback catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. On “catalyst efficiency code but car drives normally,” that was the fork that mattered for me. A shop burned me once by skipping that step. If your situation is the opposite, ignore me. That's my plan before I call anyone.

It did catalyst efficiency code but car drives normally twice this week, both times after sitting. No change in mileage feel. Next check is the cheap one I can do in a driveway.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Two 2023 Subaru Outbacks can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. Stop there until you know. Worth doing even if the car feels fine right now. Video is ugly but it shows the hesitation.

I hear you, though I'd still want a second check. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2023 Subaru Outback is losing coolant with no puddle. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. On “catalyst efficiency code but car drives normally,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. Only after sitting overnight so far.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2023 Subaru Outback, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. Save the big job until that test fails. Happy to compare notes if your setup is different. A day of patience here is cheaper than a wrong part. Parking it somewhere I can hear it better next time.
