2023 Subaru Outback — private seller still has a loan on the car

CommuterCommuter3Community StarterJan 15, 20262023 Subaru Outback WildernessOrlando
2023 Subaru Outback Wilderness, about 23,000 miles. I like a privately listed car, but the seller still owes money and does not have a clear paper title in hand. What is the safest way to handle payoff, lien release, payment and possession?

Title status is the whole conversation. If the 2023 Subaru Outback still shows a lien, coordinate payoff with the lender before any cash changes hands. Then you'll know the next fork. That's the sequence I'd use. Sleeping on the number either way.

Title status is the whole conversation. A rushed deposit before you can inspect the 2023 Subaru Outback is enough reason to walk. That's where I'd start. Post the numbers (or the code) and people can get more specific. Going to re-read the worksheet tonight.

Update from me: I finally have sale price, fees, and trade on separate lines for the 2023 Subaru Outback. Going to re-read the worksheet tonight.

I'd treat this like cash with a paper trail. Independent PPI on the 2023 Subaru Outback is cheap insurance versus a seller who “already had a friend look at it.” That's where I'd start. On “private seller still has a loan on,” that was the fork that mattered for me. If you share a photo of the worksheet, easier to sanity-check. I screenshotted the quote for later.

Same neighborhood, different next step: Meet at a bank or dealer title office for the 2023 Subaru Outback, not a parking lot at night. I'd do that before spending real money. Learned this the expensive way on a previous car. If this is nothing, great. I want that in data.

I asked for the buyer’s order in email, not a text.

Not convinced that's the whole story. Independent PPI on the 2023 Subaru Outback is cheap insurance versus a seller who “already had a friend look at it.” I'd do that before spending real money. Run the total, not the monthly, before you commit. I'll update if anything new shows up.

I'd push back a little: Bill of sale, VIN, odometer, and names matching the title — I'd want all four on the 2023 Subaru Outback. I'd do that before spending real money. Happy to compare notes if your setup is different. A day of patience here is cheaper than a wrong part. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

Asking because it changes the advice: A rushed deposit before you can inspect the 2023 Subaru Outback is enough reason to walk. Then you'll know the next fork. Run the total, not the monthly, before you commit. I'm keeping receipts and dates in one folder.

Yes, with one caveat: A rushed deposit before you can inspect the 2023 Subaru Outback is enough reason to walk. I'd do that before spending real money. Write the result down so the next test isn't a repeat of the last one. Might be overthinking it, but I'd rather overthink than overspend.

Coming back with numbers — insurance in Orlando changed the 2023 Subaru Outback comparison more than the sale price did. If the VIN lookup is clean I'm still doing PPI.

Fair point. Counterpoint: Bill of sale, VIN, odometer, and names matching the title — I'd want all four on the 2023 Subaru Outback. Then you'll know the next fork. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

This is from a 2023 Subaru Outback in Orlando with 23,000 miles. Time, temperature, and whether it's in gear are the notes that actually help a shop. Doc fee is the line I'm watching.
