2024 BMW i4 — coolant is old by age but mileage is low

RustBeltGuy896Community StarterJul 3, 20262024 BMW i4 eDrive40Portland
2024 BMW i4 eDrive40, about 13,500 miles. The vehicle has relatively few miles but the coolant is several years old. I am trying to prioritize maintenance by actual risk. Would you replace based on time alone? I am trying to get the facts straight before spending money.

Tried a second charger / second scan and the story on the 2024 BMW i4 didn't change. I keep a notes app thread for this now.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2024 BMW i4 catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. Save the big job until that test fails. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. No warning lights, which is why I'm documenting it.

Log the conditions before you spend. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2024 BMW i4 catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. Save the big job until that test fails. On “coolant is old by age but mileage,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 2024 BMW i4 in Portland with 13,500 miles. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. I already checked the easy fluid levels.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2024 BMW i4 catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. Might be overthinking it, but I'd rather overthink than overspend.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2024 BMW i4, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. That's the branch I'd chase this week. This is from a 2024 BMW i4 in Portland with 13,500 miles. Learned this the expensive way on a previous car. If this is nothing, great. I want that in data.

That's a good start, but I wouldn't stop there. Two 2024 BMW i4s can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. That's the branch I'd chase this week. No need to make it theatrical. I'll update if anything new shows up.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. Move a coil or plug on the 2024 BMW i4 if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. Save the big job until that test fails. A shop burned me once by skipping that step. Worth doing even if the car feels fine right now. If this is nothing, great. I want that in data.

Yes, with one caveat: Move a coil or plug on the 2024 BMW i4 if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. On “coolant is old by age but mileage,” that was the fork that mattered for me. A shop burned me once by skipping that step. Doing the boring step first on purpose.

If it were in my driveway, get a real battery/charging test on the 2024 BMW i4, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. That's the sequence I'd use. This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

Ask what changed right before it started. Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2024 BMW i4 does it — then decide on parts. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2024 BMW i4 is losing coolant with no puddle. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. On “coolant is old by age but mileage,” that was the fork that mattered for me. That's the sequence I'd use. Next check is the cheap one I can do in a driveway.

OP update: scanned the 2024 BMW i4 again and still only have the one pending code, no new lights. Only after sitting overnight so far.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Capture voltage while the 2024 BMW i4 is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. On “coolant is old by age but mileage,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 2024 BMW i4 in Portland with 13,500 miles. Same neighborhood, different next step: Get a real battery/charging test on the 2024 BMW i4, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. Save the big job until that test fails. Do that first. I'd rather be boring and correct. That's my plan before I call anyone.

It did coolant is old by age but mileage twice this week, both times after sitting. No change in mileage feel. I refuse to clear codes until someone else sees them.
