2024 Mitsubishi Outlander — should I tell the dealer I am paying cash up front? — buyer question from Northern Virginia

EVMechanicishCommunity StarterJun 24, 20262024 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV SELNorthern Virginia
This started as a small annoyance and I finally decided to track it down. I do not need financing, but I keep hearing conflicting advice about when to mention that. I mostly want a clean transaction. Does payment method really change how you should negotiate vehicle price?

I'd want competing paper, not competing stories. GAP, paint, and nitrogen are optional until you run the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander numbers without them. If they balk, that's your answer. Just my two cents from doing this recently. I'll post OTD once I have two apples-to-apples sheets.

I would not stare at the monthly. In Northern Virginia, insurance quotes flipped a 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander comparison for me more than the sale price did. Then the comparison gets honest. This is from a 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander in Northern Virginia. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. If the VIN lookup is clean I'm still doing PPI.

Fair point. Counterpoint: Two 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander quotes only help if both include tax, title, and the same options. Then the comparison gets honest. A shop burned me once by skipping that step. I'll update if anything new shows up.

I would not stare at the monthly. If they're pushing term length to shrink the payment, the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander price probably got worse. Screenshot the worksheet if you can. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. If the story changes I'll post the new data.

Insurance and tax belong in the comparison, not as a surprise. Call your insurer in Northern Virginia before you fall in love with the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander. I'd rather lose the car than buy a foggy deal. On “should i tell the dealer i am,” that was the fork that mattered for me. If they can't show the line item, I assume it's hiding. Wrote this up on my lunch break.

I'd slow the salesperson down here. If one piece looks too good on the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander, hunt doc fees, accessories, and the APR next. Then the comparison gets honest. A shop burned me once by skipping that step. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

I hear you, though I'd still want a second check. GAP, paint, and nitrogen are optional until you run the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander numbers without them. I'd rather lose the car than buy a foggy deal. On “should i tell the dealer i am,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Do that first. Climate here is different, so treat that as a local data point. If they get vague again I'm shopping the deal elsewhere.

Agree — and I'd add this: Call your insurer in Northern Virginia before you fall in love with the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander. Do that before you talk monthly again. On “should i tell the dealer i am,” that was the fork that mattered for me. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. This is the filter I use when the thread starts repeating itself. I asked for the buyer’s order in email, not a text.

Insurance and tax belong in the comparison, not as a surprise. A written buyer’s order on the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander is worth more than any verbal “we’ll make it work.” If they balk, that's your answer. Agree — and I'd add this: Keep sale price, trade, and financing split on the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander so a “good payment” cannot bury a worse deal. Do that before you talk monthly again. This is from a 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander in Northern Virginia. Do that first. This is the version I'd tell a friend.

Compare apples to apples or you'll get spun. Ask for out-the-door on the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander with fees, add-ons, and rate on separate lines. Do that before you talk monthly again. If they can't show the line item, I assume it's hiding. If this is nothing, great. I want that in data.

Hard-won lesson from my last deal: Keep sale price, trade, and financing split on the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander so a “good payment” cannot bury a worse deal. If they balk, that's your answer. On “should i tell the dealer i am,” that was the fork that mattered for me. I'd want a dollar figure or a measured spec, not 'should be fine.' If your situation is the opposite, ignore me. If they get vague again I'm shopping the deal elsewhere.

Update from me: I finally have sale price, fees, and trade on separate lines for the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander. Going to re-read the worksheet tonight.

If I were shopping this, i would not wire money until I've seen the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander and the title situation in person or via a trusted PPI. Screenshot the worksheet if you can. Just my two cents from doing this recently. Not letting add-ons ride along because everyone does.

Walk if they won't put it on a buyer’s order. Two 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander quotes only help if both include tax, title, and the same options. Then the comparison gets honest. This is from a 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander in Northern Virginia. Stop there until you know. Worth doing even if the car feels fine right now. Doing the boring step first on purpose.

That's a good start, but I wouldn't stop there. If they're pushing term length to shrink the payment, the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander price probably got worse. Screenshot the worksheet if you can. If they can't show the line item, I assume it's hiding. A day of patience here is cheaper than a wrong part. If the title is messy I'm out, full stop.

I would not stare at the monthly. In Northern Virginia, insurance quotes flipped a 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander comparison for me more than the sale price did. Screenshot the worksheet if you can. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. That's coming from doing this as an owner, not a shop. Not wiring anything in the meantime.

Asking because it changes the advice: In Northern Virginia, insurance quotes flipped a 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander comparison for me more than the sale price did. That's the part that actually changes the decision. This is from a 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander in Northern Virginia. Was this after sitting overnight? Doc fee is the line I'm watching.

OP update: I got two written quotes on the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander and the out-the-door gap is bigger than the ads made it look. I asked for the buyer’s order in email, not a text.

Treat this like a math problem, not a vibe. GAP, paint, and nitrogen are optional until you run the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander numbers without them. Do that before you talk monthly again. Run the total, not the monthly, before you commit. I'd rather be boring and correct. Might be overthinking it, but I'd rather overthink than overspend.

Get the messy numbers in writing first. Call your insurer in Northern Virginia before you fall in love with the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander. I'd rather lose the car than buy a foggy deal. The trap is a pretty payment hiding a worse car price. If one piece looks too good on the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander, hunt doc fees, accessories, and the APR next. Then the comparison gets honest. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. Doing the boring step first on purpose.
